9mm vs 380 +P

    There is no question that a 9mm is more powerful than a 380. But with these new pocket nines with less than 3 inch barrels, I have not seen a comparison. I have a Beretta 84 with a 3.75 inch barrel I shoot Buffalo Bore +P ammo in. This gives it 50% more energy at the muzzle or around 300 #ft. Kimbers new Solo has a 2.7 inch barrel. With standard 9mm cartridges would it still have more muzzle energy than my Beretta?

    This reminds of those word problems in algebra class. I usually didn't have a good answer then either. :)

    This sounds like a job for "Ballistics by the inch".

    While trying to keep bullet weight close, the velocity of a 9mm Federal 105 gr. Expanding FMJ out of a 2.9" barrel Rohrbach R9 is 985fps and the velocity of a .380 ACP Buffalo Bore 95 gr. FMJ +P out of a 3.66" barrel Walther PK380 is 1088fps. What that means is another thing as the 9mm round is still slightly heavier that the .380 and the fact that this 105 grain 9mm is the lightest load they tested.

    Buffalo Bore shows the BDA, almost the same as the Beretta 84 with the same barrrel length, as 1160 fps and 298.7 Ft/# at the muzzle with a 100gr FMJ.

    Only pistol I know to compare it to is a pf9 with a 3in barrel
    Federal 124gr +P HST
    1133fps average
    About 375 ft lbs

    XTP 115gr, 6gr Unique(+p load)
    Average 1252.72
    Not sure on ft lbs

    PS I wasn't sure if you wanted to compare regular 9mm vs 380 +p or 9mm +p to 380+p but either way here it is.

    So what is the more important figure to compare, FPS or Enery Lb's?

    If two projectiles at the same ranges transfer similar energy upon impact, does that mean they are siimilar in lethality/knockdown effectivness?

    I believe foot pounds to be the real measure of transfered energy. I know a bullet can only go and do damage if first it gets there, second can hit a vital area, third do enough damage to stop an attack.

    There are lot of opinions, one of my sons is a paramedic and sees several gun shots wounds per month. He says a 45 ACP or 357 really does a lot of damage, but he has seen all calibers that can kill, some take more time than others.

    Son number two is a police officer on a large police force, he is in a gang area, he likes to carry a .40 caliber even for a backup. He did have to use his gun in self defense once and it was one shot and one almost instant death, however, the bullet hit a vital area, a 9mm or 380 to the same spot would have caused death.

    Bullet placement is the most important thing to stopping power, if you use a 380 multiple shots are going to be needed to stop a dangerous threat in most cases.

    I shoot 300-500 rounds per month, I have gotten better over the years, however, I will never be good enough to place my shots under stress as well as I do on paper, which will require me to shoot until the threat stops.
