Anyone know if there's a way to tell the date from the serial number? Like a certain number maybe the year? I've had this one a long time and it was used when I got it.

Call Remmy's cyst. service dept (contact # on their web site). They have special dept to answer this. They did it for 3 EMs from 70's I inquired about. They also can estimate the barrels, too.

I would not trust the dating accuracy, or any other info you get from Remington on the phone, as far as I could throw my truck. I say this being a real fan of Remington products.

Virginian, thanks. Never thought to doubt. The guys with Wingmastets I mentioned above were pretty happy. Years sounded about right to me, too. Never even thought to verify elsewhere... Any ideas? I think I came across some databases on web, but doubt they were for Remmys...

The Remington Society has dating information, serial number ranges and barrel codes.

Sorry to nitpick, but that will give you the date for the barrel. With the proliferation of barrel swapping, thanks to people like me, that may not be the end of it. And then of course you have all the barrels with no date code, and they are not just extra barrels either.

OK I got the month, March. But when I look for the year it has 3 J's on that table..1940, 1962, 1989. My barrel reads A J 7. Wouldn't guess it to be a '40.

Since the 870 was not designed until 1951, pretty safe bet that the 1940 date is out. Serial numbers not required on shotguns until 1968, so the 1962 date is unlikely.

Remington started putting serial numbers on all their guns waaaaay before 1968. If your serial number has no letter prefix, it's 1962. Otherwise 89 wins by default but your prefix better be 'W' or someone swapped barrels.

    Thanks guys I think I've got a '62,
6 digit serial #,, 7xxxx8V no letter prefix just a V at the end. If that's the case I just gained a lil more respect for ol' wingmaster, 51 years old and still as sturdy as a tank.
Now I kinda wish I hadn't done any modifications to it, lasted a long time stock until I got it,,
