I have been buying brass reloadable ammo at Cabelas for something like $12.99 for 20 rounds. I can't remember what brand it is. But they always have it on the shelf. Might have been $14.99. But I know it wasn't more than that. I go that route because 7.62x54r new brass is rediculously expensive. It was like $69 for 50 cases. That wasn't even loaded ammo!

I reload my 54r as well, I traded a bunch of .357 reloading equipment I received from my dad for 100 rounds of brass

The length and caliber of 7,62x54r and .30-'06 are almost the same, right?

Anybody know the difference in grains of powder between the two? The 54r case seems to be so much larger, I'm wondering about the pressures between the two.

    Thanks!

the pressure the case is capable of is more important. the reason the 54r is lower pressure is because of the weaker steel cases. brass cased 54r can be loaded to the same pressures as the 30-06. do NOT interchang charge data between the two as case design can have an effect on the pressure curve. the performance of the two is sooooo close i believe that somone copied someone else

    max pressure:

    7.62x54r: 57,000 psi
    30-06: 60,200 psi

    7.62x54r: 150 gr 2,840 ft/s 2,677 ft/lb
    30-06: 150 gr 2,910 ft/s 2,820 ft/lb

That is the information I was looking for, Jon. I don't reload. I was just asking how close the two performed. You read my mind, as usual.

And at half or a third the cost, 54r is a smokin' deal!

The steel case Monarch 54r ammo is berdan primed, some of the brass case Monarch ammo is made in Serbia mainly by Prvi Partizan who also make Wolf Gold line ammo those rds. will be boxer primed and reloadable.

As of today Cabelas is selling two brands of 54r ammo online Prvi Partizan and Herter's The Herter's is repackaged steel case Russian ammo and it's berdan primed as well. The Prvi ammo is brass case boxer primed and reloadable, the price on the Prvi SP ammo didn't appear to be all that great compared to some other online retailers.

In case anyone needs any Prvi boxer primed brass Graf & Sons just got in a shipment it $48 per 100 they haven't had in for over a year. I bought a couple hundred pieces several years ago so I'm good for awhile.

Prvi Partizan is the brand i have been reloading. I remembered when I saw it one the last persons post. It has been pretty good ammo for me. Also, it does not lock up the bolt like some surplus ammo does. You know how it is sometimes realy hard to open the bolt after shooting a mosin? Not so with the Prvi Partizan.
