I am currently in the process of making a semi-auto 7.62x54R Assault rifle.

Its gonna have the Ak style platform, 30 round mag, and iron sights.

what I have done so far is take a cheap PSL put a regular stock on it (not a skeletal one) and in the process of shortening the barrel and making a 30 round magazine for it (maybe a 50 or 100 round if i can figure out how to get over the rim on the cartridge easily enough)

What you think you think this could be something that could be produced or just a personal gun? Also if you have ideas for overcoming the rim on the cartridge for the 50-100 round drum mag stacking wise would be greatly appreciated.

I think your going to have feeding problems as soon as you exceed 10 rounds, with no good feasible way to overcome it. But by all means, do what you can, and keep us informed.

Besides the feeding problem Trip accurately identified, the muzzle blast from a shorty 7.62x54R is ferocious.

Ill probably make some sort of compensator for the end of if I need to, as for the feeding problems it might just have to be just a long a** magazine, but if I recall correctly someone made a semi auto .357 pistol that used the rimmed cartridges, but went kaput because of the length of the cartridge was making the grip to big for people.

Take a look at a magazine from a Bren. They fed a rimmed cartridge,
    303 British---reliably. If feeding 7.62 x 54R from a big box magazine
was easy, the SVT-40 would have had a 30 rd mag on it.

They did, it's the coonan, and to my understanding they're back in business recently. It's also only got a capacity of 7 rounds.

The only problem I have with the Bren is that's its magazine in on the top, and the reason why the SVT-40 didn't get a 30 round magazine is because the gun was designed as a rifle not an assault rifle, it would have been to bulky for a 30 round magazine.

Only way I see getting around the problem is some way of actually gripping the round by the rim in the mag like a stripper clip does, but not holding the top round by the rim like the others. You would have one hell of a bannana though, unless you made it a drum mag, cause it would probably have to be single stack.

    Never Forget.

I will be the horse's hind end here and say there cannot be an "assault rifle" in 7.62 X 54 r because the cartridge does not fit the "intermediate rifle" definition necessary for an assault rifle. And, how are you going to make it select fire? Not legal to make a machine gun post 86.

I know, I'm an azzhole. The term assault rifle is one of the most misused and inflamatory terms in the gun world. If you want to make a tacticool, SUR, I'm all for it.

So Robo, do you consider the AR10 to be an "assault rifle"?

The anti-gun left have bastardized the term assault rifle and used it against us. Heck they have bastardized the term assault and attached it to all sorts of firearms...Assault pistol, assault shotgun, assault knife.

We as a gun owning fraternity should not allow such words to be used to be used against us. Sport Utility Rifle (SUR) is the current trend. Black rifle is cool too.

i'm with robo on this, as i hate the term "assault rifle". if i shoot someone with a single shot 22, in theory, it's an assault rifle! this term is just a word the media and politicians have used to describe a certain type of weapon, to try and show it to public as being evil and wrong.

there is a company that cranks out a couple hundred semi auto belt fed PKM every so often. the PKM is the soviet equivelent of the M60 and uses the 7.62x54R

got to fire a full auto version in the army its a hoot and a half.

i dont since they are not designed to assault people.

there has only ever been one rifle designed that is specifically an "assault" rifle. the Sturmgewehr 44, it translates out from german as assault rifle model 1944.

the ar10 and ar15 are armalite rifle model 10 and armalite rifle model 15. no assault anywhere in the name. the ak47 is not an assault rifle either. its full name is Avtomat Kalashnikova (Автомат Калашникова) model 1947. which translate out to automatic rifle designed by kalishnakov. no assault in the name there either.

since the term "assault rifle" is linked solely to nazi germany its little wonder the news media tars every firearm with that term.

please dont use it unless your referring to a stg44

The PKM would be a nice rifle to have and I retract my earlier comment about the "assault rifle" comment
