Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes a frangible bullet in the 68 or 69 grain range in a .224 dia. acceptable for use in an AR? Right now I am shooting Matchkings and I am afraid those are going to ricochet like crazy!

Match bullets are not designed to hunt w/ period. Why don't you try Sierra 63gr SMP. They have been excellent in my Bushmaster and CZ, both are 1:9. I've seen a few riccocets over the years, that is "a few". Don't shoot at rocks!

My AR has a Wilson Combat 1:8 twist match barrel, won't group for hell with anything less than a 69 gr bullet. It's my fault for getting a rifle barrel with a 1:8 twist, it's just that the 1:10 twist was not in stock.

Your rifle should stablize 55gr and up. 1:7 is used for 62gr military ball. If both of my 1:9 shoot them very well, your rifle should also.

50, 55, and 60 grainers are shoot like garbage. I shot some 68 grain factory stuff thought grouped pretty decent, so I loaded up a bunch of 69 Sierra Matchkings with 25.4grains of Varget behind em, and voila, 1/2 MOA. I may shoot ground squirrels with em but just out of the bed on my truck so I am elevated, should equal less ricochets.

Try a different powder. I use H335, BLC(2), and IMR4064 for .223. Your rifle may like the lighter bullets w/ a faster powder.

I was loading those lighter rounds with Reloader 7 and I did a full load work up with each. I found some Speer soft points online in 70gr. that may be suitable for varminting...

    Squirrel,All of my 223's have 1-8 twist.I shoot 55-80gr bullets through all of them.It isn't the bullet,it's your load.
H322,H335,BL-C(2),Varget,IMR 4895,and Reloader 10 are the powders that I use.
My AR's like to shoot 60gr Vmax's over the 55's,but they will still shoot 1/2-3/4" groups with the 55gr's and the right powder.

I've been trying the Speer 70gr & the Sierra 65gr soft points out,but haven't found the perfect combination yet.

You will just need to work up a load that your gun likes, but I have always had very good results with H335 with 55/60gr Vmax's.

Boy I am glad that no one ever uses SMK to hunt varmints with.

That is all we shot growing up 52gr SMK in every 22 cf we owned.

Squirrels just exploded when we shot them all all the way out to 400 yards.
