I think you should leave it as the '06, good enough for practically anything and is very versatile if reloaded.

6.5-06 sounds like a winner. That will also make a dandy Whitetail/Elk rig. Don't forget about piggies!!

i too have in the works still a rifle in 6.5-06. one thing you have to keep in mind is that every round will have to be handloaded as there isn't anyone making factory ammo in this configuration at this time. it is still a true wildcat round.

the 6.5-06 has some excellent ballistics that are pretty close to the 6.5-284 Norma round, which is one of the premier cartridges used in long range competition shooting at 600 and 1000 yards and does it very well. given the ballistics are so close to one another, the 6.5-06 should be just as accurate at the same distances.

so my vote is, yes rebarrel that Savage as a 6.5-06 and go have some fun with it!

i thought about the 6.5-284 but like you said the 6.5-06 is close to the same ballistics and i figure the 6.5-06 would be cheaper to build then the 284 and easier to reload

well Savage does make a rifle in 6.5-284, and you could always just order a factory barrel and screw it onto your action, but what fun would that be? the 6.5-06 i don't think will be any cheaper to build than a 6.5-284 if you go the custom barrel route as you will have to with a barrel for a 6.5-06. and they make factory ammo for the 6.5-284, but most people who shoot it, probably reload for it anyways. but it would be a good source for cases. MidwayUSA does have cases for the 6.5-06. the 6.5-06 can be made from 30-06 or even 25-06 cases.

E R Shaw makes a 338-06 barrel ready to screw into the action. now they will probably make you a new barrel in 6.5-06 for it. and best i can tell the rim diameter is the same so the same bolt face should work. rim diameter seems to be .473 on both cartridges.

If you are changing to the 6.5-06,the barrel/recoil lug/barrel nut is all that you'll need to change if the rifle is currently a 30/06.
You could also change it to a 300 WM,but you'll have to also change the bolt head out to the magnum bolt head.
You don't have to chnge the recoil lug or the barrel nut,but if I'm changing barrels,I always do.

An Action wrench,Barrel nut wrench,Go and No-Go gauges are all you'll need to do this yourself.

E.R Shaw does make the 6.5-06.They run around $240,but they are behind on production right now.I ordered a 7mm-08 and a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel back in March '12,and just got my 7mm-08 barrel. The 6.5 should be here next month from what I was told.
I got in on a group buy for these barrels, and only paid $158 for each barrel. They are both a 26" Stainless Varmint contour.

I just did a thread on installing the 7mm-08 barrel-

I seen I could change it to a 300wm but I figure it would be cheaper to buy a new one then switch everything out and im goin to have a smith do the barrel swap for me cuz im no gunsmith lol

nothing wrong with that. sounds like a good option. go back and read TXHillbilly's posting on installing the barrel. a very good read. he's goes into a lot of detail and is very well written.

Dont get me wrong I love my 06s but I want somthing different and flatter shooting then a good ol 06 and I have been looking at the 6.5-06 and 300 wm and I like the ballistics of both of them plus I have been here in California visting family and I shot my cusins 300 and I really liked it but seems how I live in Missouri I dont have much use for a 300 besides shooting groundhogs and targets lol

If you love your old 06, then would not the .25-06 be your logical chose being a lot cheaper & easier to find than ither the 6.5-06 or the .300 Win. Mag., just a thought..............
