A feisty five-year-old girl confronted a knife-wielding burglar in her home by shouting: 'Put my Daddy's car keys down'.

Chloe Edwards heard noises at 2am and ventured downstairs to see who was in the kitchen of her Middlesbrough home.

It was then that she came across Dean Affleck, 18, who pointed a meat cleaver at her and told her to go back to bed.

Chloe's parents, Mark and Rachel, had already begun making their way downstairs after they'd heard the burglar accidentally smash a glass.

It was then that they heard Chloe tell Affleck: 'Put my Daddy's car keys down.'

The incident happened on the day Rachel was due to start a five-day stint of chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Once Chloe was safely back in her bedroom, with her four-year-old brother Sonnymac brother and ten-year-old sister, Rebecca, the father went back to the kitchen.

Mr Edwards, 33, said: 'I shouted to him to get out of my house, and he replied that he was "Just getting some ice cubes." So I told him I'd get him some ice cubes!

'I chased him out of the back door and bolted it shut. I thought he'd gone, but then I heard him trying to get in the front door.

'I couldn't believe that he was trying it again. He seemed drunk.

'My first thought was for my family, but it looked like Chloe already had that covered.

'We're very proud of her, she's definitely a feisty one.'

Mr Edwards went outside and chased Affleck round the garden, eventually punching him to the ground after he made a final attempt to run off with his daughter Rebecca's bicycle.

However Affleck managed to wriggle free and punched two girls, who live nearby, out of his way as he fled into another garden before the police finally arrested him.

In court it became clear Affleck had forced the back door of the Edwards' home and the family found a carrier bag stuffed with electrical equipment he was attempting to steal in the kitchen.

When he was searched by police he had a lock knife and small amounts of amphetamines and cannabis for his own use.

The young villain also had the Edwards' house and car keys.

Affleck, of Middlesbrough, was jailed at Teesside Crown Court earlier this week.

He was sent to a young offenders' institution for three and a half years after he pleaded guilty to the August 15 burglary, two common assaults, possession of a bladed article and possession of drugs amphetamines and cannabis.

Bryan Russell, defending, said that Affleck was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time, and he could remember little about it.

Judge Peter Bowers told him that he had been given an 'amazing' chance in January with a community order for a similar burglary.

The judge added: "It was a five-year-old child who found you first.

'I can't imagine what went through her parents' minds.'

Chloe's mother Rachel, who is now in remission after her second battle with breast cancer in three years, said: 'It was an awful experience, as soon as I saw he had a knife I was terrified.

'But Chloe was as brave as anything - I couldn't sleep all night, but she was fine. She kept saying afterwards: "I told him, Daddy, I told him to put your keys down, didn't I?"

    'She's my little hero.'

That's a brave little kid, but she's lucky it wasn't a "real" bad guy.

Too bad her dad didn't give the guy a good beatdown, he's lucky he didn't get shot. I know if it were alot of guys on this forum's house and we saw a knife in his hand it would be lights out.

She was lucky the bastard didn't have a firearm (that of course, criminals don't have since they're illegal). Of course, if he had one there's nothing her father could have done either, being the UK.

Or if it had happened here, for that matter...

In the UK!! Oh! I'm surprised they didn't arrest the homeowner for not being more cordial and welcoming. Was his knife registered??!!

'I can't imagine what went through her parents' minds.'

I know what would have gone through his mind if this happened in my house and it would have been travelling about 950 fps.

When there is not fear of getting shot by the resident, burglars feel free to do their business at any time, day or night. In Texas, a night time residential burglary is almost unheard of. When it does happen it generally is the last time the burglar breaks into a house.

A brave little girl! The bad guy tried to break in again after being ran out of the house!!! Clearly no fear of being shot, sounds like gun control is working out fine in the UK for the badguys. If it would of happened at most forum members home that guy would have been nothing but a bad memory now.

so he tried to tell the father, that he was getting some ice cubes? WTF!?!? that is the WORST cover up in history. I would have kicked his *** all the way to McDonalds, "Why didn't you just go to McDonalds jackass, they would give you a cup of ice for free."

Brave little miss! I can trust that when she grows older and becomes a women she can take care of herself and fight back any hostile encounter with that same bravery.
