Well, I am probably gonna have to move to California in the next year. I am looking to get a different pistol - I have a S&W 9 mm now and holds up to 16 rds and I am not able to carry more than 10 there - I am comfortable with the 9mm with the 16 rd magazines I have now - but if limited to 10 would like a bit more stopping power and would like recommendations on non- 1911 platforms to look at

I would seriously look at the Smith & Wesson M&P in the .45. I have two and am very pleased with them. They shoot anything I load in them and are far more accurate than I am.

The Sig P 220 fits that bill.

    I would look at a:
    Sig p220
    H&k 45
    S&w m&p
In that order. 3 great guns with 10 rounds or less of 45.

Or you could check out my personal favorite non 1911. The springfield xdm. You can get just restricted 10 round mags for them

Glock 35 in 40 cal also gives you a lot of stopping power.

Isn't the compact model of the XD a ten rounder?

Yes it is and it comes 10 round mags for Kalifornistan. The free states get a 10 and an extended 13. About 34 oz loaded with 10+1 of 230 grain 45 acp. Glock 30 or 36 are other options in 45 acp.
My condolences to anyone having to move to Kalifornistan the land of the Kalibaners.

That doesn't sound too bad, considering the geographic disadvantage. I have really enjoyed the dependability of my fullsized XD "tactical"/geezer barrel. It has yet to malfunction or jam on me.

Don't want a 40 S&W because I don't like the round is high pressure and not that awesome -

I like the M&P 45 and would look at the XD too. The Glock will not fit my hand.

Look at a glock 30sf in that case, thinner grip front to back and fits most people alot better.

    I hasve a SIG P220, a 1911 and a Glock 21. I like them all.

But the SIG just stands head and shoulders above the others. I'd just buy a SIG and be done with it.

I have a sig 229 45acp & Glock 21....love them both however the Glock fits my hand like a glove.....not saying the sig takes a backseat but the Glock 21 would be glued to my side if shtf

First off, my condolences about the move. I wish you well. Second, the Sig 220 is phenomenal. Never had a problem with any ammo. Even after boxes of that cheap dirty stuff. Feels great, and I can shoot it much better than any 9.

    Picking a 45 auto

Not an easy decision to make. I have two 1911's and a Glock 21 and enjoy them both. Had a Sig 220 yrs ago and loved it. If you can find a range that rents different guns: give them all a try. By the way, the Sig 229 mentioned earlier only comes in 9mm; 40 S&W and 357 Sig calibers. I have the 357 Sig. You may want to check out the Glock 45 GAP on the Glock web site. Good luck, Dogwalk

Thanks guys - when I said the Glock doesn't fit my hand - it is the grip angle that causes me fits - I carried a S&W 1076 as a duty gun as a Deputy Sheriff in Spokane, so it is not the size of the grip - rather the angle.

Will look at different models - plan on getting one here in TX before I move to CA so I don't have to worry about whether it is on the DOJ "Safe" List

Or I could just by 10 rd magazines for my SD9 and live with just 10 rds of 9mm

    Sig P220 or P220c
    S&W M&P 45c
    Springfield Armory XD-45 compact

I have both Sigs and the XD, excellent pistols.
