Hello, I have a 410 bolt action shotgun that was actually my grandfathers but given to me. Anyways I have had it now for a few years and shot it several times. I have always been using either 2 3/4 inch shells or 3 inch shells but recently was given some 2 1/2 inch rifled slugs(410 of course). My question is are the 2 1/2 shells safe to use with any 410 shotgun or only certain models?. I am guessing it wont be a problem but much rather make sure first :)

Dude what type of a shotgun gun is it and about how old? What is stamped on the barrel? Why do you want to shoot slugs?

Using shotgun ammo that is shorter than called for is OK. Make sure the barrel is acually stamped 3" before shooting 3" ammo through it. 3" shells will chamber in a 2 3/4" gun as the chamber is cut for the length of the fired shell and the 2 3/4" shell is actually 3". This allows the longer shell to chamber but there is not sufficient room for the crimp to open properly. The pressures can get too high and patterns suffer.

Back to your original Q - 2 1/2's are fine in the longer chamber.

First of all, it would help to know the gun and the markings on the barrel. Second, I hope this is a smooth bore. Not the best thing to shoot rifled slugs thru a rifled barrel.

It would help if you provided info on the shotgun. Bolt action with or without removable mag? Make, model and other specs like bore type.

I'm thinking you will be ok, but best be sure than a damaged firearm. :)

I have the same gun and shoot 2 1/2" slugs through it all the time. They are nice, light, bird/squirrel guns. Just don't trust the safety!

Am I that far out of touch, as far as I know, nobody builts a 2 3/4" 410 shell. All I know they make are 2 1/2" and 3" with a few older 2" still hanging around.

Jason always remember a safety is a mechanical device that can and will fail. A safety should never be used in place a safe firearm handling.

Rule #4. always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

    Stay safe brother, Hunter Joe

The issue with the early Mossberg safeties (pre-1980) is that they CAN be overcome with moderate trigger pressure on some guns, the 183K shotgun and 352K .22 rifle are both unsafe.

Of course, I agree 100%. I am not new to guns. I take gun safety very serious. I was just pointing out that I personally have never had any problems it but never would trust it;).
