I love my m&p 40c. I wouldn't change or trade it for anything but then again its all based on preference. Good luck on hunting. Also, keep us updated on what ou go with

There is no "best" for everyone.

$500 polymer guns will treat you pretty well. Figure out which has the controls and fit the suit you best. Most of this can be accomplished by simply handling them in a gun store. Glock, XD/XDm, SW M&P, FNP, Beretta, Ruger, etc are all fine. I avoid Taurus...we'll call that a personal choice (I've shot some that were excellent, but seen too many headaches arise amongst friends). The Sig SP2022 40sw can be found for right around $400 and I think it's a really solid gun.

For metal, I'd prefer a new CZ or a used Sig at $500. I wouldn't even look at anything else. Again, personal preference...but I'm confident almost all shooters who have owned either will agree. There are a handful of other good options. The Beretta 96 is a good gun if you don't mind its monstrous size. The old 4-digit S&W service pistols are good if you get one that hasn't been abused.

    I currently own
    Glock21
    BerettaM9 w/22lr practice kit
    SigP226 elite
    S.A. XDm9
    Colt Lawman MK111

Just looking for a small 40cal to add. Bored with the XDm. Had it for a while and like the glock more. Don't ask why.

I'm not a Glock fan myself, but it kinda seems like you've answered your own question.

If Glock is what you enjoy, what works for you...G23 or G27 seems like the simple answer. And they're everywhere. Finding one at your price point should be easy enough.

    Sweeper22...Congrats on 1K posts!!!

To the matter at hand...I've had the Walther PPS in .40 for 3 ish years now. It's a good 'un. When I bought it, was $650, now can be had for a smidge over $500...#*&@&*#!@%^&!!!!!! Ya live ya learn...Anyways, it is and isn't like the XD's or Glocks. Might be something worth looking into...

There is no such thing as "best". That said, my 40 is a Springfield XDm.

It seems like when you talk compact and even more so sub-compact, the price range rises and you sort of get out of that $500 area. I wish Stoeger Cougar 8040 was offered in a compact as I own one with a 3.7" barrel that carries 11+1 that I use for CCW and it's at the upper size area for me to carry. Thing is it's still in your price range and it's a great quality weapon for the money. Second to Stoeger, for me, would be a Bersa Thunder 40 UC, Pro 3.25" barrel, 10+1 mags with finger extention, listed under $500. Both pistols have steel slides and alloy frames. I own an XDm 40 and honestly I'd rather own two Cougars as to the XDm's performance and cost, at least for me. The Cougar has been the most accurate centerfire pistol I've ever owned.

The Bersa .40, both the UC & HC, get good owner reviews. My first pistol was the Bersa Firestorm Mini .40 which is the same as the Thunder UC 40 with some cosmetic differences. Break-in consisted of clean, lube & load.
