I think there's some rule there that says ya gotta ooh and aaah a .38 super.

Just as there is the "10mm shuffle" (picking up brass), there is the ".38 shuffle".

The oohing and aahing is an admiration (jealous?) reaction that started when the .38Super was introduced to the IPSC arena. People in the know at that time knew the advantages and disadvantages of running a round close to max to gain all potential.
Some people who thought they knew had some problems with blown up guns.

Kinda like "I'm envious that you are on the edge of danger, and I don't have the testicles to try that."

"Back in the day"- the .38 Super was some hot stuff. A 1911 in Super carried a couple of extra rounds, and shot through car doors that would bounce a .45. But the "day" was in 1929.

It is still the hottest thing around? No. Decent? Oh hell yes! Do I drool over them? Nah.

Does it have an advantage over my 10mm or .45?

For defensive purposes, it is a decent round (with the right ammo). It survived partially because it is popular in Latin America where military calibers are illegal. Colt made a ton for export. It was revived by IPSC shooters as it works well for Open Class pistols. Several spin off cartridges such as .38 Super Comp, .38 TJ.

    To some extent, yes
Less felt recoil than the 10mm, but not as powerful.
More rounds in a single stack .45, less recoil, capable to work comps

Think of .38 Super being like a 9mm Magnum.

RIA, Colt, EEA, Citadel and Les Baer have models that shoot the 38 Super round. with the exception of EEA, all are built on the 1911 platform. the one i ordered has a MSRP of $520 for the blued and $583 for the stainless. i ordered the blued version, cause i'm a cheapskate!

Axxe,I got me one of those RIAs' in 38 Super, just to try the round out.Wasn't expensive ,just a blue GI.It's a piece of crap!Won't feed hollow points, flings the brass in my face, and this is after my smith did what he could with it.It will feed fmj to some extent. When it feeds,it's a blast, very accurate, throws some fire, but with RIA,ya get what ya pay for!Hope you have better luck.

A 1911 was not designed for hollow points. They simply didnt exist when the firearm was born. Also try to tune your extractor your brass should eject at the extraction point not away from it.

even my American Classic II Commander flung brass in my face from time to time, before i tuned the extractor. and as Tactical put it, they were designed for FMJ ammo, and not JHP, so when i get mine and as it will be strictly a range pistol for fun, i will most probably use nothing but FMJ ammo in it. i'm sorry you have had bad luck with your RIA, but from what i have seen and heard, i am willing to take a chance on getting the RIA in 38 Super.

maybe send it back to the factory for warranty work. from what i hear, RIA has an excellent CS department.

My buddy shoots some 3 gun and he uses a .38 super 1911 for it . he says its cheaper for him to reload and provides him with a little more accuracy than his 45 and has those extra rounds needed for 3 gun

1st if the gun is wrong and isn't working then send it to RIA and they will make it right. 2nd what in the hell is is this crap about a .45 1911 isn't for HP's. Maybe 40-50 yrs ago but that problem has been identified and corrected by all companies. PERIOD!! If your gun doesn't run right send it back and ALL companies will fix it. Some like Colt,SA,RIA are garunteed for life. CS is great. To many crappy rumors floating around out there. For your info Kimber is ONE year. Reason I will not own one.

An a1 model is built to mil spec i.e not designed for hollow points. One with a polished feed ramp is not mil spec. Look it up before you tell him we're all lying. Example : my ruger sr 1911 and springfield a1 will not feed jhp - my sig sauer scorpion is 1911ish and will.

Never had a 1911 that wouldn't feed HPs but one. It was a RIA 9mm tactical. Gave it to a smith friend of mine and he handed it back a week later and it runs them now.
Here are a few of mine and they all run HPs. GC,SA,RIA, and others added since then. I suggest you send your guns in to be fixed sir.
