I have a .38 S&W with a serial number that starts with a D. It's a 4inch barrel and like new, in the box with the papers from S&W. What's it worth and how old is it? Anyone know or am I better off calling S&W and asking them. I'm hard pressed to find anything that will allow me to track the number for the year.
    Thanks and happy shooting.

No way to even begin to answer without a lot more info. Value of ANY gun is drien by make, model, and condition.

BTW, you DO understand that 38 S&W and 38 Special are 2 different cartridges?

Get us some pics and all the markings, we'll do what we can.

Pictures will help a great deal. There were many makers of handguns chambered in .38 S&W. Smith and Wesson is but one. If you can post the first 3 to 4 characters of the serial number followed by "x's" denoting how many other characters there are, I'm sure someone can get you close on the year of manufacture.

This is S&W's customer service number:
    800-331-0852 then 7
They can generally get you a date of manuf. during business hours or you can request a letter from S&W for $35.00

    I don't know of a decent on-line resource.

Nice gun. Open the cylinder, and look on the part of the frame that WAS covered up by the crane. You should have a model number stamped there.
