Hi my name is dogger, I have a Springfield M1A National Match with a Stainless Steel barrel. Which shoots better, is cheaper and is military surplus 7.62mmx51mm NATO Ammo safe in my M1A1.

Yup. 7.62 NATO and .308 Winchester are the same animal.

According to SAAMI, and manufacturers of higher end M14s they're different. Like the 5.56/.223 Rem, there are minor differences. A SAAMI spec .308 will run higher pressures than 7.62 NATO.

The Springfields are chambered for .308 Win, so the lower pressure 7.62 NATO will work. Watch for slam fires on the SAAMI spec primers though.
