Looking for a good scope for long range target shooting for my .308 Bolt Action rifle. Want something that I can zoom to at least 20 max magnification. Preferably Mil-dot reticule. Like to keep it around $500.

I have a friend with a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40 and it's a really nice scope. Clearly brighter than an el cheapo version I have used in the past. I believe he has it on a .243 but it never loses zero. Around $400 as well.

Why don't you tell us about the rifle. Is it just a sporter or is it more like a medium to heavy barrelled target rifle. What do you refer to as long range? Are you planning to compete or just plink?

ST 44 asked some basic questions. You'll find on cheaper scopes the Mil-dot just clutters things. Why a 20x ???

Keep it below $1250 and you get a few nice options.

Well you can find some cheap not worth a crap scopes for around $500,or you can save a little more money and get a decent scope that you'll be able to use,and be happy with.
Good quality glass cost money, and you'll need around $750+ to get into a decent Long Range scope.
Two good entry level Long range scopes would be the Sightron SIII series,or the Vortex Viper PST series.
The Sightron has better glass, tracking, and more Elevation/Windage adjustment. The Vortex has a few extras that Sightron doesn't offer like first focal plane reticle, and a Zero stop turret.

I prefer the Sightron over the Vortex.
