I am building a 300 blackout AR-15.
Can any one give me tips?
I'm about where you are. I've got a Franklin Armory lower and i just bought a Daniel Defense 300 upper. No ammo . .
I guess the tip is ammo is pricey and hard to find! It's a nice alternate to have in my opinion.
Assuming you guys could even find the ammo, what would it cost? I bet way too much.
Here is my tip; Find out what ammo IS available, and try to find an upper that will shoot it...
Agreed. Start looking for your ammo. I'm learning that lesson now. Supersonic only for me as it's my understanding subsonic is for suppressed use only
$1.25 a round Not cheap
nope its not supressed only. some lighter loads pretty much duplicate 7.62x39 performance.
it is however a round that is best if your a handloader and are willing to make your own brass from 223/556 brass
Never made my own but it's on the to do list now that I've got this upper. I don't regret buying it but i wish i would have gotten some ammo first!
I just picked up a Smith and Wesson MP15 chambered for 300 Blackout/Whisper. I also have a hundred rounds of 220 grain subsonic and another 100 rounds of 115 grain coming. Continental Arms in Maryland has a whole shelf of the 300 blackout ammo. It's not cheap either, I pay $23 bucks for a box of 20.
I have 500 rounds of factory 220gr sub sonic and about 1000 rounds of reloads that I have loaded up! I plan on using this AR to hunt hogs! Will post some pics as build progresses along only have upper and lower and barrel should be getting parts in mail all week!
My tips, based on my tastes. If you've got a big budget and intend to suppress it, start looking at a Noveske 10.5".
If you want a really great, non-SBR 300blk, fork over the $1400 or so for a Daniel Defense M4v7. You can buy/build them cheaper, but you'll be hard pressed to do much better for a complete rifle. And keep in mind that the DD name on the upper, lower, BCG, etc, + the $300 handguard that will be included will help you alot if you ever sell this gun. DD is my personal favorite when in comes to tacticool value in complete ARs.
And if you want to build a budget 300blk, PSA is impossible to beat IMO. Their cost:quality ratio is almost always outstanding. You can probably do pretty well there for under $1K.
I have a PSA upper and it is nice. I have shot subs, supers, and hand loads using lil gun and H110 with zero malfunctions. My suppressor is in transfer still. Even un suppressed, it cycled 220gr subs! The PSA is hard to beat at the price, if you can find them.
A pistol build is next on my wish list. SBR's are the only illegal NFA item in my state.
Barrel lengths longer than 16" are a waste.
Barrels are heavier than 5.56 so light hand guards are nice.
Buy Lil'Gun and H110 every time you can. They work great for supersonic.
AA1680 is the only reliable powder for semi auto subsonic rounds. I have yet to find any of this powder so buy it while you can.
Check MidwayUSA for blemished bullets. 150 gr are common and often $20/100. Great for plinking and hunting.
115-125gr are best for hunting due to velocity maximizing expansion. The copper Barnes bullets are the best but most expensive.
I love my 300. I'm lacking 223 brass so I have considered shooting most off my 223 so I can convert the brass. I rarely use my .223.
That would be great!
I bought the DD upper and have no complaints. Except regarding ammo . .
Well I have been reloading and it is some what cheaper! I have about 25000 5.56 km Lake city brass so I will cut down at least 10000 cases to resize for 300 black out! It it very easy to cut down the brass to use for 300 aac black out! I enjoy loading bullets so this is the way I choose for bullets. I am building my 300 black out from the ground up. I have built several AR's I hope it runs well when done. Will run factory ammo to test and break in the rifle!
What's your budget?
I just built a 300 a few months ago
Ammo if you can find it
Its way you much
Gun shows were selling 20rd for 50$
Such a rip
I bought some in Dec 20rd for 15$
Start the process today for getting a suppressor, maybe even through an NFA trust.
300Blk's big benefit is the option of suppressed sub-sonic rounds.
I guess to go along with this suggestion, you should probably choose a flash hider with a suppressor in mind. Of course, the new Liberty Suppressor company has a short-barreled, integrally suppressed 300Blk upper, requiring only a single $200 tax stamp!
I already have the suppressors and it is a QD. I plan on using it on the 300 blackout when hunting! I also have a 223/5.56 mm suppressor for my other 2 AR'S and love them! I will look in to the barrel the is integrally suppressed that sounds awesome! Thank you for the info
Explain the reasons for having a .300 blk suppressed. I keep reading about suppressed unsuppressed. Kind of confusing. Building my 2nd AR in blackout, but the cost of these suppressors are more than the rifle. I'm done with the lower and need a few parts for my upper, barrel, bolt carrier only, CH, etc. but I'm getting a little discouraged over the whole suppressor deal. Especially since this rifle is more custom than my last.
It's quiet, (sometimes no hearing protection needed), and it's BADASS! And, possibly, you just have too much cash lying around.....
Why and how are you getting discouraged over the suppressor? You certainly do not need one, don't let anyone tell you you do....
