I just started deer hunting this last season, using a Mossberg 500 with a deer barrel. Didn't see any deer. This next season, my dad wants to get me a deer rifle, possibly a 30-30 Marlin. I do like the Marlin, but I love bolt action rifles. I've looked online for a 30-30 bolt action, and noone manufactures them. Can anyone tell me a bolt action rifle that is similar to a 30-30, that won't break the bank to buy

Maybe check the used racks for an older Savage 340 model - fairly common, inexpensive and should be a good working gun.:)

Why not just get both at the same time? A Marlin XL-7/XS-7 bolt action sells for around 300$ sans scope and comes in all the popular deer gun calibers such as .243, 7mm08 (my choice), .308, 25-06, .270, and 30-06. I KNOW they're decent rifles and perform beyond what their price point would indicate.

Persoanlly I would go with the Marlin 336, but since you will be useing the gun the ols 340 might suit you better. Check some gun shops in your area they should not be to hard to find. I still see alot of them at the gun shows, which is another good place to check.

If you have your heart set on a 30-30 bolt action then search for a Remington 788 in that caliber.

Have you checked the prices of 788s in 30-30 lately? They're becoming collector's guns due to the fact that there were so few made in that cartridge.

IMHO if you want a bolt action you would be opening a world of better choices for a deer rifle. A 308, 30.06, 270 would all be more versitile calibers. You can also get a Savage 200 for less money, which are way better guns than the 336 for less money.

You could also consider getting a Harrington and Richardson single shot rifle in 30-30, to use until you can afford to get a good bolt action in one of the more versatile calibers such as 308, 270, 280, 30-06, 300 RCM, 300 WSM, etc. The single shot will teach you to always make that first shot count.
