Went shooting this weekend and brought with me a 3/8 inch steel plate to shoot at long range with my 30.06 and was surprised by the result. ImageUploadedByFirearms Talk1396322303.027769.jpg

The bullet reads K A 7 1. Picked them up at a gun show awhile back. Is this typical of this round and caliber? Im just surprised it went through the metal like that?

I would have to say that has more to do with the steel type than that particular bullet. A guy from my church set up his own private range with hardened steel targets set at 100yard intervals out to 500 yds. I was worried I would damage the targets with my rifles since I have seen plenty of targets such as yours shot though with rounds as small as a 5.56. Much to my surprise my 5.56 AR and .308 M700 did not do much more than make splatter marks. My friend's .300 Weatherby Magnum didn't do anything either. My guess is that the steel you've got is a mild steel.

..... Sorry that didn't help with the bullet type though! My bad!

Hey thats okay ha ha! I was just surprised and didn't think a typical bullet could do that. I stopped shooting after that. Kinda worried me.

Mild steel, hit with a Full Metal Jacket bullet. Surprises a lot of folks. Armor Piercing is much more impressive.

I put a hole in 3/8" AR500 steel with a 7.62x54R 203 gr bullet at about 100 yards. In fact, I put two holes in the target. 3/8" steel of any kind is going to be damaged by a stout rifle cartridge. The 203gr barnual soft point bullet passed through 3/8 mild steel so quickly the target didn't even wiggle.

Head Stamp says, Pusan Government Arsenal, Pusan, Republic of Korea 1971, if that is indeed a K A 7 1, its just a FMJ ie; Ball Ammo, I made a buddy mad & had to get him another spinning target, it was made of 6in. circles 3/8 thick & I poked holes in it at a little over a 100 yards with reg. old 7.62 NATO FMJ, I can imagine what an 06 would do at a 100 yards !.............
