Ok, I've been thinking about battle rifles lately and was wondering, does a 30-06 AR-15 exist or is it possible to build one? I like M1 Garands but they only hold about 8 rounds, and I like AR-15, but a .223 doesn't have the power and range of a 30-06. I would really enjoy a semi auto that could hold 30 or so 30-06 rounds. Anybody know of anything like this?

Probably going to have to go to an AR-10. I'd think the closest would be the .308.

I myself am a large fan of the good ol' 30'06 but what about the other large calibers available in the ar platform? There is quite a few to choose from.

What are some of the other calibers? .270, .300, 7mm, ect.?

The only 2 calibers I knew of were the .308 and the .223.

I'm not dead set on an AR, It's just a really popular gun so I thought that there would be a lot of different variations.

Is there another semi auto 30-06 with a hi cap magazine?

I am not the expert, by any means.

AR-15 won't fit anything longer than that 5.56x45mm round. The AR-10 platform was built around the 7.62x51mm round (a short action). It won't fit the long action .30-'06 round at 54mm.

The flatter trajectory of the 30-06 is great, but why do you need that round? .308 is nothing to sneeze at!

I know someone containing more information than myself can chime in and help out with this but i know some of the bigger calibers available are...

458 socom, 6.8 special, 308, 50 beowulf, 450 Bushmaster, 308, .300 AAC BLK, .300 Whisper. (stolen from others posts on this forum).

Then again there is also the smaller calibers available, 223 (5.56 nato), 7.62x39, and of course the good ol' 22 lr.

I am sure there are many that I am forgetting, but I am sure someone with more information will chime in. :D

I did a little searching an found that you can get 10 rd mags for a remington 7400 but the problem with that is that the barrel might not stand up to the heat of rapid fire. I may decide to go with the AR-10 .308. What I'm really wanting to do is make a really cool, custom, one of a kind gun for myself. I may start another thread on this later. :)

Don't forget about the 6.5 Grendel for the AR15.

458 socom:eek: They can make a monster sized (diameter) round like that work with a AR but not a 30-06!!! I may have to give that round a try.:D I think I'm still leaning toward the .308 if I cant have a 30-06.

Cobb manufacturing made a 30-06 length "AR" platform rifle. I believe they were bought out by Cerebrus, the parent company of Remington and Bushmaster. There are some out there. I have heard of a .338 Lapua based on the Cobb platform.

Pony up the bucks and go find yourself a good ole BAR. $25K, a little for some attorney fee's, 4-5 months, and you can blast away in 30-06 to your hearts content. And with 20 round mags to boot.:D
