Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and to shooting in general. I mainly shoot for rabbits and hares. I own a 12G, .22 and a .223.

Im looking at buying a biger calibre gun. I have decided that either a .308 or a .270 will do for my needs.

I need your help on which calibre to go for? .308 ammo is cheaper over here in Aust, but i've been told that .270 is a flatter shooting round with just as big of a punch?

Any help would be much appreciated please.

Both .270 and .308 will take most American and European big game. .308 has the obvious advantage of cheap ammo, but some countries don't allow you to hunt with military calibers and in America, many states require that you use soft point ammo to take game. Requiring soft point ammo to take game rules out the use of inexpensive surplus ammo for hunting.

My dad kept us fed for years with a Remington bolt action .270. It dropped large bull elk just as easily as it dropped small deer.
