Just wanting some advice, I got into a huge argument at work about me hunting elk with my .270 win. It's a great rile, a tack driver just ask theropinfool . My co-worker claims its way too small and nothing more than a deer rifle. I use a 140 g hornady btsp handload and I think it's humane. Any opinions? I chose the 270 because it is a classic round and can be used on about anything. I load 90 gn hollow points for jackrabbits and love it. But I digress, too small of a round or am I good?

I would use a 30-06 over a 270 but I love the 06 lol but a 270 will drop a elk just as good as any other round would

Lots and lots of elk have been killed with a .270. Yes, it is big enough. How many times does it have to be said that shot placement is the first consideration, even with big game hunting? You can't do it all with just size and power alone.

I knew you'd feel that way, but I was kinda hoping for an excuse for a bigger bore. Maybe 7mm mag or 338 lapua. I ran into a guy last night that got the savage hunter model 338 lapua and loves it. I've said it before, you can never have too much gun. I do use a 270 on wabbits.

My friends compare me to Dale Gribble, and I'm ok with that.

That's what I have always believed, but my work crowd at the hospital, well they just don't see that side. He said inhumane less than a 7mm mag.

I'm a fan of the 06 as well, I just don't have one. Do you choose 06 because of the heavier grain bullets? Just curious.

Having seen over 100 killed, I do have some experence. The 270 Win caliber is a fine round, and has been used for years here in Colorado by oldtimers, who only have one rifle. I killed a few elk with the 270 and had good results. However I question your choice of bullets. On broadside lung shots, then the bullet SHOULD work. However elk seldom follow a script. Many shots will be anything but perfect. Boattail bullets have a tendency to seperate jacket from core, thus penatration is severly limited. I would HIGHLY recommend Nosler Partions as the bullet to use as I have seen many many animals killed with this bullet and have never seen a failure.

Just picked up a some boxes of nosler partition, Sierra game king, and hornady sst to play with. I would load them up right now, but I think I'm in trouble enough being on the Internet instead of watching little kid moves with the family

7mm = .277, so not much bigger bore size than .270. Although can push a heavier bullet out of 7mm cartridge.

Sorry misspoke, I know the diameter is essentially the same, just a belted magnum with the ability to push heavier grain bullets

It is a little known fact that until 1962, no elk had ever been killed with a rifle.
They all died of old age, high cholesterol, or falling asleep while smoking. Not until the 7mm Magnum was created did anyone harvest an elk with a rifle.

Yes, that is sarcasm. Did anyone tell the experts that folks were dropping elk with Hawken rifles- and Moose in Canada with .303 Enfields?

I would consider the .243 to be on the light side for an elk, but not a .270. Tell them that you do not shoot the elk, but hit a rock directly underneath them, and they all die from a heart attack brought on by being startled. High cholesterol, y'know. Does it every time. But TRY to keep a straight face.

I think I may quote you on this! It's ironic in that I work in the cardiac Cath lab and fix heart attacks!
I thought it was enough gun but just wanted a few other opinions, I don't claim to be an expert.
