Looking for a tactical .22 lr rifle I have narrowed it down to Remington 597 vtr with collapsing stock or colt mp4 ops model. Any suggestions?

I've had an M4 OPS for two years. Virtually impossible to tell from a genuine AR by sight, weight or feel. Shoots great, ammo PICKY. The gun is made by Walther of Germany, excellent quality with a TIGHT match chamber. If the ammo brand is loosely spec'd when manufactured it will cause some failures to feed, fire or eject. After 600-800 rounds they smooth out nicely. Mine likes Federal bulk-pak. Standard AR trigger assemblies and breakdown procedures don't apply with this arm. It's design is totally proprietary by Walther. If you can get around the fact it's not a true AR, it's a nice little rifle. The standard 1/2X28 barrel thread must be gotten by use of a thread adapter, easily available. The stock body is mil-spec, but the tube itself is proprietary. A standard AR grip will work by drilling the holes out slightly. The accessory rails are standard. The dust cover will accept a standard AR unit. The forward assist is for looks and the safety selector is 180 degrees instead of 90. The newly produced ones may have changed safeties. The magazines are proprietary and Black Dog mags won't work. The mags are very easy to load and are reliable.

I bought the Remington 597 quad 4 a few months ago and love it. We added a bipod and a 3x9 scope. It is very accurate and the price at Cabela's in Dundee MI. was $ 299. and it came with the collapsible stock

So, what makes a .22lr tactical? Configuration, color, Stupid crap that adds weight? If I can buy a .22 auto compared to a tactical that is supposed to look like a battle carbine, but costs $100.00..300.00 more, I'll stick with the plain .22. If you want a battle rifle, buy one! You can slap lipstick on a pig, you get a pig w/ the runs. Nothing works quite right.

I have a DPMS lo pro 16, my son loved it so I'm thinking of getting him something cheaper! I'm leaning toward 597 vtr. By the way this is my pig. .223! At 100 yds

You are missing out if you are not including the S&W in there.

Which is most accurate! Even .22 lr accuracy is the most important. All my rifles are heavy barrel. Is the s&w accurate and if so what loads?

Both are Excellent and Accurate Rifles! They love Win 555 36gr 22LR Ammo. No FTE's/FTL's on either one to date..... Knock-On-Wood!

If you have an AR, why not get a dedicated .22 upper for it?

I won an S&W at the FNRA dinner last night.:D I pick it up today at the gun shop. I dont know about the others but the S&W breaks down the same as an AR. I hate having to pull the barrel and action out of the stock to clean as on most 22lr semi's.

    hi ARrgv,
i have a S&W mp1522, great gun, lite and accurate. pricey at 500 -575 $. two versions, one plain jane and one with heavy barrel and rework by the performance center at S & W. you can get in the game with a ruger 1022 and trick it out. the colt is good but has a fake load assist, shoots the same as the S & W. ati has a ar-22 not as much $. i just received a gsg 1911 from them and its more fun than you can have for 15 $ of ammo.

    good luck,

I like my S&W 15-22. Can't compare it with other types, as I haven't fired them, but it's fun to shoot and fairly accurate.

Went to academy, felt s&w 15 felt a little lite. I was partial to metal frame. Need to find a colt mp4 ops. Hard to find and expensive.

Did you mean Colt M4 Ops? I couldn't find an MP4 Ops listed on Colt's site. Not sure where you're located, but Cabela's has them on Sale for $499.88, down from $639.99. Pretty good Savings, which = More Rounds you can buy!

    auto load ammunition

    hi ARrgv,
federal automattch 40 grain mv 1200fps 1080fps at 50 yards. 325 round box $ 15 at walmart cci has a bulk box 40 grain round mv 1250. have not tried them, im happy with the automatch. my buckmark and gsg1911-22 runs great on them. i read on a S & W forum that the automatch are designed for the ar 22 work very well in the 1022. as for accuracy the colt and the S & W the same, my browning sa 22 German or Japanese version will out shoot any thing but a custom built target gun. love the bottom eject, J.M.B.

I have the Colt M4 OPS (made by Walther).
It runs flawless with CCI MiniMags and is EXTREMELY accurate.
