Hey guys,

I've tried searching the forum and google, but can't seem to find any info. I want to purchase a semiauto 22LR pistol without a fixed a barrel. Maybe it's just a rimfire thing, but I can't seem to find any without a fixed barrel. Do you know of any that exist? If not, sounds like a 1911 and a conversion kit is my only hope.

the reason for a fixed barrel is the 22lr cartridge doesnt have enough energy to cycle a delayed blow back design. colt did try and make one way back in the 40's called the colt ace. it was a 1911 conversion that tried to emulate recoil of a 1911 but failed. was too pricey and mostly didnt work that well in some configurations. with modern high velocity ammo the old colt aces work very well but are very very pricey if you can find one. its just a gun that was way ahead of its time.

thats why you wont find one that isnt a fixed barrel. it just doesnt work as well. what you got against fixed barrel 22lr??

If you can find one, I believe the old Llama XV 22lr was set up like the 1911 and the barrel was not fixed.

The Colt Ace fired from a fixed barrel. The barrel had a floating chamber that recoiled against the breech face up on firing. This free floating chamber gave the felt recoil of a standard 1911 firing a 230 grs. HB round. They are fun to shoot. The accuracy was not always constant as the chamber fouled and would stick and not always in the same position.

If you are going for a gun similar to a 1911 why not get a Sig or GSG model? I have the GSG and love it.

Oddly enough, my mother has one of the colts you're thinking of, old shoots 22 shorts however. I really love that gun, but regularly get FTF from it.

Sig's 1911 22lrs are actually made by GSG, and I've read about a lot of guide rods breaking after just 500 rounds and you can't buy a tougher guide rod for them.

I like removable barrels for ease of cleaning, but I'm not 100% against them, just like convenience (don't we all).

I'm headed to the local gun shop and Gander Mountain today to have a look. I'll report back if I find anything otherwise keep thoughts and suggestions coming!

Maybe I misunderstood the question. The barrel in the GSG1911-22 is removeable but I'd consider it a fixed barrel because it is held ridgid by a pin & a screw, in addition to the slide stop pin.

Not true - a company named CW Accessories sells several superior replacement parts for the GSG. Including a precision machined guide rod. Check out this link. I run one of these in mine.

Sweet! Thanks for the info on that Bart! That makes me think more about the Sig....however, while shopping today, I handled the Colt 1911 22, and I loved it, so it sounds like I have a decision to make!
