I spent the last couple of hours researching a .22LR pistol. Here is what I have narrowed down my list to: Colt Goverment .22, Ruger SR22 and a Walther P22.

This gun will strictly be for practice/target shooting. The reason for my choices are as follows. The main choice behing the Colt is that it is a 1911 chambered in .22 and I believe it will help me with familiarise myself with the 1911 (possible .45 1911 purchase in the near future). The same applies for the Ruger and Walther since I already own a G17 Gen4.

I chose not to go with a .22 conversion kit for one simple reason. The kit itself costs almost just as much as these three examples and I would much rather have one gun set aside for this purpose alone. I do not see the point in having one gun for a dual purpose when two seperate guns can accomplish the same goal for the same amount of money.

My next line of thought goes to the .22 ammo itself. I have noticed there is a huge market out there to choose from. I was concerned with a "break in period". I took the advice of some friends and put 124 gr. (I recall buying a box of higher pressure ammo but don't recall what kind) ammo downrange through my G17. Is there any recommended ammo in regards to this or does the same scenario fall into place? From what I have seen so far, people recommended to me a few boxes of the more expensive CCI ammo and than just switching to your value pack 500 round box you can pick up for $12.

Any insight on the gun/ammo I have spoken of, good or bad would be highly appreciated. Heck, even if I forgot to mention any gun that you guys love please feel free to share!

Have a p22. I like it. Finicky about ammo but eats Remington thunderbolt or mini mags. Thunder is cheap.

Take down is OK...but putting back is nasty.

Everyone who holds or shoots it, loves it. Great ergonomics.

I have a GSG 1911 - 22lr as well and the p22 is more fun because it is more of a challenge. The GSG is 5" and heavy and hardly moves when it fires. Kinda boring really.

How about the Sig Mosquito and the 1911 .22?

I just picked up a S&W M&P .22 and its superior over the P22. The fit and finish is amazing and feeds the cheap bulk. Not as finicky with ammo as the other semi-auto .22 pistols

When I got my p22 there were only a couple of options in non target. 22. The mosquito had some issues back then.

    Would have loved the m&p

Definitely add the M&P 22 to your list. If I did not already have a P22, that would be my choice.

I like the p22. Forget the value pack ammo and use a quality ammo like minimags and it is great. Take down and reassembly is easy for me.

My only problem is holding that guidrid while trying to get the slide on. Slipped the other day and shot the rod and spring across the room.

This is good up to 50 yards and cheap too.

There we go! Is that yours? What is your experience with it? Does it eat up cheap .22 rounds or do you stick with CCI?

I was looking to purchase a .22LR so I did some range time with the Ruger .22 Hunter MKIII, S&W, Walther P22, Beretta Neo and the Browning 1911-22. My final decision was the Ruger .22LR Hunter MKIII. I really liked the feel of the Ruger. It is very accurate and t will eat anything you feed it! The only down fall I have found is to the Ruger is breaking it down. It is not a simple task, but they all have there downfalls. It is somewhat on the expensive side for a .22LR, but the base Ruger .22LR MKIII is comparable to the other models I mentioned.

I just picked up a Ruger SR-22 on Gunbroker today for the kids. I have a Browning Buckmark which is also a great .22.

I's mine and it's shoots Winchesters and Blazers both. I've put 200 rounds through it and never had any problems. Shots 1" groups at 25 yds and 2" to 3 at 50 yds. Easy to strip and clean too. I have a 22 High Standard Citation that I shoot at matches, but you will have to pay a lot more and they are hard to find too.
I also have the Colt 1911 22 made by Walther. It's has been retired to the safe along with the other Walther. I've never had luck in competition with a Walther. There are a lot of Walther lovers out there though but I just don't see them ever win anything.
Don't let me talk you in to anything though.

out of the 3 mentioned the ruger sr22 is by far the winner.. has a much smoother finish than the p22. so far ive only ran cci but it worked fine and i intend to run cheap stuff the next time out. it fits well and the mag release is like a larger pistol unlike part of the trigger gaurd with the p22. and because its light it has a tiny amount of recoil which is fun. also consider these other 2...the browning buckmark and ruger mk series 1 2 or 3. they are great shooters and eat most types of ammo

I don't know anything about them, but in the research I did on when buying the Ruger and reading reviews, it sounds like the Walther has plenty of issues and is finicky about what you feed it.

I have P22 love it, fun to shoot, use mini mags although i have had very little issues using cheap stuff. The laser you can get for it fits nice and almost looks like it is part of the gun.

I have the GSG 1911 which is the same gun as the sig and it eats anything but gets dirty fast and starts to have some issues after a couple hundred rounds of cheap dirty stuff.
