What kind of rifle is it (other than .223)?

I use a bore snake for the bore. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=9687/Product/BORE-SNAKE

Are you stripping it down to clean or just cleaning it assembled? When stripping mine down I use Hoppes #9 Nitro cleaner (I have a case of it) and I just picked up some Ballistol that I like just as much.

To answer your question, "yes" you can use a .22 cal brush in your .223. The bullet diameter of the .223 is virtually the same as a .22.

A .22 rod or cleaning kit is fine for a .223.

Use a Bore Snake as they recommend. I would use Hoppes #9.
