    The real Sgt York rifle. Nice. lots of folks think he used a 1903 Springfield for his famous German turkey shoot. It was a 1917.

    The movie has him with the 1903 an "american designed" which was a mauser copy which we where sued for copy right infringement by the Germans and lost. While the 1917 is basically a rechambered English Enfield rifle

    The 1917 was not re chambered. It was built in both calibers. They were originally built for the Brits but when we ran short of 03's they built them in 06. I just remember what I could buy them for 50 years ago. I had a 17 and an 03 at one time.

    Pattern 14 was the original rifle in .303 being built in US and British factories. The pattern 17 was the .30-06 version, allowing US small arms factories to take advantage of existing tooling and quickly beef up US small arms supplies during our entry into WWI.
