I recently regifted an AMT hardballer to my stepdad, that I got some work done too. Well I just talked to him on the phone and he says when he took it out shooting the slide would lock back randomly? What seemed every other shot or every third shot. We live in different states so I heard all this over the phone. Does this sound like anything you have heard? Maybe its the magazine?

Either positioning of his left thumb or the plunger/slide stop config. If the slide stop has replaced, it may not have the detent deep enough or in the correct position

I've also seen this happen when the end of the slide stop, where the spring loaded plunger rides on it, was shaped incorrectly. The angle on the end should be such that the plunger holds it down, very gently. If the fit is bad there, the slide stop can bounce up when the gun fires. I saw one gun that has been assembled improperly, and the plunger was jammed inside the tube. It wasn't engaging the slide stop at all. The slide stop was just loose. It would lock open almost every time it fired.
