Would a rifle chambered in 17 HMR be a good Home Defense Firearm? It's more powerful then the 22lr and i don't think it would over penetrate.

A baseball bat is better than your hands. What kind of 17HMR, bolt? Auto loader?

I don't think there are many semi auto 17HMR rifles. it would most likely be a bolt gun.

There are a handful, but some are pretty pricey

The thing I like about it is that even through the ammo shortage it was available. You can get a 17 HMR Rifle with a scope for $299.00

It's better than nothing, but no where near ideal.

Rifle and a scope for $300? First off, the scope is not much good in a home defense situation, and might actually get in your way. Red dot or simple iron sights are better for close range shooting. I'm guessing it's also a bolt action correct? Not a great choice for home defense.

For $300, you'd be better off going for a shotgun (there are plenty of pumps out there for under $200), or a cheap handgun (in price, not quality).

You can get a CZ-82 in 9x18mm Makarov for about $260.

9mm Makarov is a little more powerful than a .380. It's not something you would probably find on a Walmart shelf, but it is out there and is less likely to be effected by a buying craze than something like 9mm or 45 ACP.

Here's some hollow points for it.

This is only a suggestion. There are plenty of other good guns out there that would be within your price range.

Quite accurate, and potentially quite lethal. However, stopping power is about par with a slingshot, and probably less that a golf club.

Listen to Joe Biden- get a shotgun.

For the price of a scoped 17HMR you cna have a decent 12 gauge. And it is a good HD weapon.

Add me to the "not a good idea" list. In addition, it seems to me that a small bullet going that fast would easily over penetrate sheetrock and hollow core doors.
But, correct me if I'm wrong, but there have been revolvers made chambered in HMR.....

Are you using the rifle to shoot the intruder or are you using it as a club??? If you are using it as a club then you are good to go

if you walked into a room and saw the owner pointing a bolt action rifle at you, would you continue walking forward?

If it was all I had, I would certainly use it. But I wouldn't purchase one for a defensive weapon.

Personally, bolt action would take it out of the running for me.

Depends, am I high on drugs and/or crazy as hell?

Any gun is a deterrent, and any gun is better than no gun, but a bolt action .17 HMR is definitely not what I would choose for self defense if I had other choices.

I agree with most everything that has been said so far. You may not be dealing with someone that is logical, rational, or sober. So the fact of just a small rifle being present might not and probably would not be much of a deterrent especially on drugs.
Although I have a Marlin 917V 17 HMR with scope and love to shoot the little rifle! It is accurate and a fast little round! But I would not recommend it as a home defense gun. As was stated nothing better for the money for defense than the old reliable Shotgun. For example if they would not be deterred by the "racking of the slide" the impact on their body would get the point across if they lived to realize it. Actually better than a handgun in a lot of ways. And the selection of good defense loads is almost unlimited. So if you are going to buy a gun on the pretense of self defense I would not suggest the 17 HMR for that specific purpose.
