I have a J.C. Higgins, from Sears, model 566 22, that will not cycle shells nor feeds shells properly. I believe for starters, the ejector is not ejecting all the time. And, to load, it's a matter of being able to maneuver the shell and shotgun in order to get a round in battery. This is a nice heirloom and will go on a shelf, as is, if too expensive to fix. But, I would prefer it function properly. Thanks folks for any helpful replies.

Can't really help without looking at it up close, but I have experienced a problem getting an old one of these going completely into battery without being forced on occasion. Best remote advice I can give you is to strip it and clean and degrease it thoroughly, then put it back together and apply light oil, running snap caps through it and see if it improves. It may just be gunked up with old grease.

    20 ga bolt

Thanks for suggesting that I clean and "de-gunk" the receiver area. Always helps to remember to start with basics. However, I've cleaned very well and still can't get shotgun to cycle properly. I have to use both hands in the feed ramp and position shell so it will load into magazine. I can cycle bolt, a shell will come from magazine and the following shell in magazine sometimes drops out, nothing is holding it in place. I think there should be a way to synchronize the action from ejection to retrieving from magazine and feeding onto ramp.

I would download a schematic diagram or a youtube video on how to assemble the bolt. Make sure the bolt is assembled properly. Eliminate the obvious first.

It may have been made by Savage for Sears.

sounds like a shell stop is missing or broken.

    20ga bolt shotgun won't cycle

    Hello Hiwall,
I believe it is something like the shell stop. But, I haven't found schematics yet to see what a good mdl 583.22 looks like. Thank you for the post, it really helps.

Paul, have you tried looking at the carrier spring to see if it is bent or broken. If the carrier isn't working properly the shell won't feed correctly thus causing cycling problems. On the side of the barrel what model is stamped on it? Also the carrier rivet could be missing. The plunger and or spring could be damaged, sometimes old guns have springs that aren't as stiff as they were when they were new.

    Bolt 20ga won't cycle

A J.C. Higgins 583.22. Magazine allows loading rounds into the tube but shells won't stay in tube. And it won't lift a shell up and let the bolt push the shell into the chamber. Basically works like a single shot. It's a good sturdy gun, not worth a bunch but it is a heirloom. :) Thanks for helpful/kind replies.
