If you are defending a fixed position, a drum might be useful. might!

The marketing for these has been specifically targeted to appeal mostly to the pimple faced "tacti-kewl" crowd.

B4 you buy one, borrow one, load it and hike a couple of miles up a mountain trail. That will very quickly kill off any desire to own one.:)
From the reading I've done for these, they also have god-awful feed problems. Something about the force required to keep acceptable pressure on 100rds of .223/5.56 for reliable reliable feeds into the chamber. There's a reason SAW drums are just a plastic box with belted rounds in them.
Drums or beta mags have to be lubed as far as I know. I'm not 100% but I have seen people doing this.

I would go belt fed if I was trying to throw a lot of led.
The Beta C-mag is the standard by which all others are judged. You do have to lube them (they come with lube). I'm thinking abour getting one for my AR-9mm. Just for the heck of it.
The beta cmag is the only one ive seen that actually works for the ar15.

Drums are HEAVY. Ive got one for my ak it doesnt live in the gun. They totally destroy the balance of a lightweight carbine. They ARE fun as hell.

I've had the KCI 100rd mag for several years, and have had zero problems with it feeding rounds in any of my AR's or my Keltec PLR-16 pistol. You do need to keep it lubed up with dry graphite, and it came with 2 bottles of it.
I bought it just for a fun time novelty, and didn't expect it to function flawlessly, but it has and I would buy another if they didn't cost so much.
The weight of a loaded mag isn't too bad,and it offsets the weight of a heavy barreled gun.

Mostly just getting it for the fun factor at the range... obviously i'm not gonna swing that huge thing around the house if there was an intruder, a 45 would be my choice... thanks for the info
