  • Take the Mauser

  • Keep Enfield and alter the sights

Would you make this trade?

A guy at my local gun shop wants to trade me a 1903 Israeli Mauser made in Germany chambered in 7.62 NATO for my '68 Enfield 2a1 chambered the same.
Don't know condition of Mauser let's just assume that they are of equal condition. I like my Enfield; I just hate the rear notched iron sights.

Both guns are pretty much equally rare variants. If both are in the same condition it's a matter of preference. (Riding the fence like a politician). I don't see any real point of one over the other. Now if you could get both...[emoji6]

My only comment it would be solely your choice! Although in no way would I ruin a good quality Enfield's value by changing the sights!

So, what is wrong with the Enfield sights?

Strain the aiming eye when closing the dominant?
Or is your non dominant eye just not as good in vision?
If strain, don't close the dominant eye. Put a pc of scotch tape on your shooting glasses.
Blocking dominant eye of course.

Scotch tape was the fix for cross dominant shooter that was unable to just close one eye.
Some folks can't close just one eye.

I'm right hand dominant and
I can close both or either eye but my depth of field isn't as good in my right eye as my left and just the large area of my sight picture that the notched sight covers in my visual field makes it harder to aim in comparison to an aperture sight

I don't think you need any correction, some prefer one action over the other. I've built many nice rifles on the Mauser '98 action made by BRNO, VZ & Mauser Works, up to .338 Winchester Magnum. The preference that I've found is that some owners like the "cock on opening" aspect much better than the cock on closing type, rather than convert the bolt.

It seems that the decision has been made for me. I stopped by to see what he would sell the Mauser for so that I could keep my Enfield and he has decided to keep it. Before anyone gets on me for blowing a good trade, i hadn't talked to the guy for a while and he probably made this decision before I made the post.

Testor's model paint. White base coat, and two contrasting colors over the white. use the safety and florescent line.

Also, shoot left handed. It's easier than you think.

See, I'm RH, LE myself, and had to change eyes when i lost the sight in the right eye, and, after doing so, I noticed something. My group size shrank. ny theory on it is this.

Look at shooting a bow for instance. Why do we draw it with our strong hand, and support it weak handed? Wouldn't it make more sense to lower the draw weight a tad, and support the heavy part of the bow, the riser and limbs, on our strong side?

The same, at least for me, applies to a long gun as well. Especially when it has some weight to it. Plus, it's far easier to teach yourself to use the eye you more naturally use, than to constantly fight it, as, if you are a handgun shooter, chances are, you already aim with your strong eye anyway.

It's up to you, but it might be worth a try.
