Is a 9mm 1911 worth it?

Do you believe that a 9mm 1911 is a viable option for self defense or do you see it as a range toy? I own a 9mm Rock Island Armory 1911 and love it! I just haven’t really done much with it besides taking it out to the range a couple of times. I’ve considered the pistol as a “winter” concealed carry option, due to its longer barrel, but I’m still not too sure about that possibility. What are your thoughts?

I use leather holsters by Jason Winnie. One regular leather, one elephant. J111 style http://www.jasonwinnie.com/

My Tucker belt has started flexing a lot, so a belt from a different company has been ordered.

I recently had the pleasure of receiving a Springfield 1911 in 9mm by mistake. Since I travel throughout the country teaching LE and Govt. classes I have an FFL. Some dealer sent the pistol to me for a guy in Cookeville, TN. without my knowledge. Not knowing why it was sent. I thought maybe Santa had sent me a surprise gift! Or someone in the industry sent it for T&E? It was a Stainless 1911 Springfield 9mm 5" pistol. A beautiful pistol I might add! I had to call Springfield to find the dealer it was sent to. So I called the dealer to find out what the deal was. He advised it was for an FFL Transfer to the individual who had purchased it! WOW! I will attempt to attach a picture of the 1911 with this post. So I located the purchaser and made arrangements. Also, if one is looking for a Browning High Power? There seems to be an excellent quality made Clone out there. Tisas Regent BR-9 High Power 9mm from LKCI if anyone is interested.

It's unfortunate that the 9 mm Win Mag didn't get very far. Many moons ago I ordered two of the Wildey pistols, one in 9 mm Win Mag, and the other in .45 Win Mag. That pistol in it's early version had a basket full of issues. Broken firing pins and broken hammers where the "mouse-trap" style hammer spring was housed in the hammer.
I think the .38 Super, which is almost a direct twin of the 9 mm Win Mag cartridge out shadowed the newbie. Now, the Bren Ten in 10 mm caliber using the 1911 platform ( Colt Delta ) is a very serious combination.

After thinking about it I shouldn’t feel any regrets for owning a 9mm 1911. I was thinking about trading it for something else but I have come to realize that there are a lot of benefits to having this platform chambered in this caliber. Even when I was thinking about trading it for something else I was still saying that it is my favorite gun to take to the range. There are so many people who say that they traded a gun in for something else and then regretted it for years or until they were able to purchase the same thing back. I don’t want to be one of those people. I bought the 9mm 1911 because I always wanted one but I didn’t want to buy a different caliber. I’m keeping this beauty!

my colt gov't model series 70 Mark IV with an 8 round wilson magazine + one up the pipe weighs TWO ounces MORE then my CCW which is a 1911 Kimber Polymer Target with 14 + 1 .
Both are full sized 1911's in 45 ACP.
If I had a NINE (I had one for two months and sold it...didn't like it) I'd want it SMALL (compact) like a Kahr or some such thing where you could put it in a pocket holster.
Can't imagine having a full sized 1911 in something other then 45, 10 mm or 38 super !

Yea I just recently learned about the Tisas. But I purchased my 9mm 1911 last summer before the Tisas was announced or before I was simply aware of it. At that time people were advising me to purchase the Browning hi power if I wanted to stick with 9mm. But my thoughts were, “why would I want to spend $1,000 on a pistol that only gives me 3 more rounds compared to the $400 9mm Rock Island Armory 1911?” I felt like I got more value out of the 1911 simply because of the lower cost and better aftermarket support.

There is nothing wrong with carrying a 9mm 1911. I have the S/A EMP and love it. I own two other traditional 1911’s but wouldn’t want to carry them. The EMP is small and light in comparison to other 1911 . I also like my mini 1911 hybrid Sig P238. That’s the smallest and lightest non polymer your going to get, with reliability
