They are a great bargain at this time. That is subject to rapid change when the wholesale supply drys up. (Remember the recent $70.00 Nagant revolvers?)
With the recent retirement, I am giving up on new purchases. I have firearms I will never shoot again and plenty of toys to keep me busy for the rest of my life. That said, I went on a mulit-city "gun trek" with my brother yesterday. I only carried a hundred dollars in cash and some potential trade items. I am beginning the process of reducing the collection rather than increasing it. I don't want to leave a burden for my wife to deal with.
I will add, off subject, that there were a lot of long faces in the gun shops I visited yesterday. The inventories were way down and the prices were way up. The sellers have an upside down philosophy for paying the bills: Less volume, higher prices.
In the dozen shops we visited, military guns, (which are my prime interest) were very thin on the racks. I did not see and average of two milsurp rifles per store, and those typial rifles were priced as if they were museum pieces. It looks like the lion's share of surplus rifles from the last hunderd years are rapidly disappearing into private collections.
There were days, in the not distant pass, when you couldn't go into a shop that didn't have Turkish Mausers, Mosin-Nagants and various Mausers, Carcanos, Arisakas, and the like, gathering dust at fire-sale prices.
I believe that the local brick and mortar gun shops, unless they have another supporting hustle (pawn) are traveling the way of the horse and buggy, slowly fading into the sunset. I would hate to know that I had to compete with Bass Pro and Gunbroker for my living. Many of the shops that appeared on the Google search returned the phone calls with, "the number you have dialed is no longer in service."
Make sure, if you find one, use a magnifying glass and flashlight to look at the lower part of forcing cone, for cracks. If there’s a crack, its a paperweight. I have a 19-5, doesn’t have the recessed cylinder, or pinned barrel but shoots just fine. I didn’t know about forcing cone issues so I got lucky. The 19 is made for standard pressure 158 gr loads so stay away from hot 125 grainers.
either the Taurus Raging Bull in 454 Casull, or the S&W XV460. either one with a 6.5" barrel. much will depend at the time what kind of prices i can find on them as to which i will end up getting. maybe sometime this year.
Tingle single-shot muzzle-loading pistols and accessories. i have had two for decades and just really enjoy them. Missed chances to get the shoulder stock and extra barrels over the years. Another Stainless Old Army would be welcome, but recent prices are out of my price range.
I agree with the others. Mil surp bargains are over. When Missouri did away with the pistol purchase permit requirement, prices went through the roof on all handguns. All I can figure is that new ones must be made of some sort of precious metals, looking at prices. When an old Owlhead .32 is offered at $150 (Cabela's), I'm done.
I have been looking for a good 22 magnum revolver with at least a 5" barrel. I wish someone besides Taurus made an interchangeable double action. I will probably end up with a new model Ruger single six.
I am always on the alert for whatever strikes my interest so I went to an estate sale Thursday. I walked out mad as hell. I hate phoney sales. The seller had brought everything in and it was pretty obvious.

I like my Taurus pistols.
I prefer the frame safety of my PT99 to the slide safety on the Beretta that Taurus ripped off.
The PT 111 G2 is an awesome value for a small 9mm
I am pretty much in the boat with Chainfire. Looking at retirement shortly and am downsizing and upgrading.
I feel well set with handguns. Maybe looking at adding something along the lines of a T/C Contender for long range Varmints.
Rifles are the the same. Most of my Handi Rifles are gone. I kept a select few. Replaced with stainless and black laminate bolt actions. I have always liked that color combination.
Thinking of replacing the five Handi Rifles I kept, 223 Rem, 280 Rem, 300 BLk, 30-30 Win, and 45/70 GOVT with either the Henry single shots or the T/C Contender and Encore. I like the T/C Katahidin Carbine, and have always thought the Contender Carbine was a good looking gun. Or maybe just shorten the barrel and cerracote my H&R 45/70 and make my own version of the Katahdin carbine.
Shotguns are where I really need to concentrate. All I have are the H&R's. Both single shots and the Chinese made pumps. To be honest, I like the things, but I am looking at trading for the new Henry single shot shotguns.
