Massachusetts Proposes their Gun Laws for All Other States

This probably won’t fly for a number of reasons. It promises a lot of money and apparently it is from un-named sources. It is sponsored by only two Massachusetts Senators. One of course being Pochahantes.

How would you like Massachusetts-style gun licensing laws in your state?

Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) has filed a bill—S.2546— in the US Senate that would incentivize other states to adopt similar police-supervised gun licensing everywhere. The measure has one co-sponsor: Sen. Elizabeth Warren, also a Massachusetts Democrat.

Markey promoted his bill while grandstanding at a March 12 news conference at Boston police headquarters, attended by Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, a sanctuary city advocate, and Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans, and other local law enforcement officials..

Markey’s measure is called the Making America Safe and Secure (MASS) Act. It would authorize the Department of Justice to award $20 million in each of the next five years to states that adopt gun licensing standards similar to those already in force in the Bay State.

To qualify for the grants, states would have to require all gun owners to be licensed and applicants to undergo a background check. First time licensees would have to complete firearms safety training and provide references stating that they are of sound mind and good character. Local police chiefs would have the discretion to deny, suspend or revoke s firearms license if they deem a person unsuitable to have a gun. Due process would be observed by the establishment of a judicial review process for anyone appeal a police chief’s decision.

To support the proposal designed as a response to the Valentine’s Day school shooting in Parkland, FL, Markey claimed that Massachusetts has the lowest gun death rating of any state in the Union.

Some observers note that despite the enthusiastic sendoff by Markey and local officials in his home state, his proposal faces significant opposition in Congress, especially from representatives from a majority of the states, even those with handgun licensing provisions of their own. The bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee. As of this writing, there is no House version.

Hah! The version I remembered was " Where Lowells speak only to Cabots, and Cabots speak only to God."

Well, the 4473 does all of that except firearms safety training, the NRA does that for free. The background check, mental check and ok and the signature. Just another Demonic Democratic spend more for nothing at the expense of everyone else to get wel, nothing. Some People are so stupid.

Now to the heart of the matter, I am from the south and have a healthy love of all things guns and outdoors. As a 62 year old business person I have travelled and lived in some northern liberal cities with very strict gun control laws and they are definitely sleazier and more dangerous to be in. Some of the cities I’m speaking about are Chicago, New York, Wilmington (DE), Philadelphia and yes Boston!

exactly Mr. Minorcan. as a general rule, the cities that have the more restrictive gun laws, usually have higher ratios of violent crime as well.

I am guessing this will die a quick, quiet death. However if 2018 gaes the way many are predicting we are in for rough waters. Let’s face it, the left plays a much tougher game than the RINOs. If they get a majority in both houses, they are going to be ruthless.

As it stands now I think there will be no more positive gun laws enacted by the Federal Government. I think National Reciprocity and Hearing Protection are dead. SCOTUS is refusing to hear gun lawsuits, and I predict left leaning states will start to put laws through the states to restrict our rights. If another opening comes up on the Supreme Court, I don’t think the left will allow Trump to fill it. I think we will also see a massive pushback from the left on FederalCourt appointees.

I believe tough times with some draconian affects could be headed our way. I would have never thought Florida would start to tip, but it may be.

Well, I remember when NJ and Pa had no such infringements and it was safer then.
The act is it is safer to walk anywhere in Kennesaw, Ga, where gun ownership is mandatory than any where in Chicago, NJ, NYC, Boston, etc where owning a firearm, makes you a target of govt beside rampant crime.
It is strange we don't read about most of the crime in those places, except Chicago shootings, until we go there or talk with people who live there. It is as if they hide their dirty secrets.

not totally accurate Tinbucket. read the actual statutes of their laws in Kennesaw, GA.

Kennesaw is noted for its unique firearms legislation in response to Morton Grove, Illinois' law mandating gun prohibition. In 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-21]:[21]

(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

(b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw,_Georgia#Gun_law

so for several reasons, a person can be, or can exempt themselves from having to have a gun.

Gentlemen these laws that are proposed sound VERY familiar to me because this thing about registration, background checks etc are basically what we have in a lot of the states here in Australia.

Let me give you a idea of what I have to go through IF I were to go for my 1st gun license here in New South Wales and in fact it's very similar to other states............

I have to firstly go to an approved training organisation or somebody approved to do gun license tests and sit for it(costing anywhere up from $70) and upon passing then send this test in with an application for a gun license to a firearms registry which will then see your name checked off to see if your not carrying a criminal record for things like assault up to and including murder ,terrorism etc.

Now after something like 28+days IF you pass this part of the test you'll be sent your firearms licence.

NOW you can send in a Permit To Acquire your 1st firearm which will cost you $30 per permit and this will have to go through Firearms Registry AGAIN to make sure your a person of good standing which can take up to 28+ days AGAIN to get back an approval to which you then go to a gun shop and buy your 1st gun.
After this whenever you want to purchase a gun you have to put in a PTA and $30 for EACH application and go through the same background checks and by the way every time you buy a gun it's serial number and where it's housed has to be put on the PTA.

Subsequent applications seem to go through a lot quicker than your 1st application.

There are categories on what sort of gun you can have and can't have so anything automatic is just a wet dream to own and most semi auto stuff is in a category that is hard to get unless it's security or feral pest control on a farm.
Having said that we can on a Cat. A or B license own air rifles,.22 bolt action and pump action rifles as well as centre fire rifles in the same category and shotguns like U/O,lever action and SXS's.
Semi auto and pump action shotguns are a Cat.C license and can only be obtained for use on farms for pest control and putting down farm animals.
Pistols/revolvers are a Cat.H and can only be used for competition and nothing else and to obtain a pistol license you have to jump through hoops again and you have to be a member of a registered pistol club. You can only have a .22 cal pistol for a start and that's all you can have for 12 months I think it is and must attend a range shoot 4 times a year to keep your license. After 12 months you can apply for a heavier calibre pistol.

We can in some states have a suppressor but applying for 1 and getting 1 is a different thing almost impossible you might say because the cops and general public along with the low life politicians are scared that somebody will assassinate them and nobody will hear the shot.....................
This why I say that this load of crap that's being proposed is VERY similar to a lot of our stupid gun laws.

A few years back 1 of the prominent Greens ********s from Australia visited the US to talk to your lot of anti wankers and passed off our gun laws to them PLUS an ex PM also visited who was the engineer of our "world's best gun laws" onto your anti's hence why I say that these proposed laws are very familiar to the load of bulls&*t your being served up.

"F" Elizabeth Warren and the rest of the Massachusetts liberal, progressive democratic wipes! Let them keep their idiotic ideas to them selves or for the resident of Massachusetts that keep electing these people into office. I am aware that everyone in Massachusetts doesn't agree with these ingrates, but enough do that keep them empowered. So, it appears that most of the state are okay with the way things are going there?

Here in Florida we have people who are calling for an increase in “gun free zones.” I look at it and wonder what these people are thinking. They obviously are not looking at both sides of the position. The politicians preach the gun free zones, and you have to wonder if it is to set up another tragedy to push their positions. I realize that is a harsh assessment, but where was the outcry when Steve Scalise was shot?

It has been my experience from being there 3 winters in a row that the people there hate themselves, so you know where that leaves you ! The average person on the street will get totally pissed off if you politely ask them a question. They deserve their winters and gun laws.

The gun laws here are not bad, at least not yet. Gov Scott has gotten shaky on the 2nd Amendment, but he is term limited and wants to unseat Bill Nelson for the Senate.

I think some of the Democrat cities are getting ready to mount a challenge to the state firearms preemption law, and expect a magazine limit challenge after the 2018 elections. We can still win those fights.

Where your statement is correct in fact said:
here is no evidence to suggest that looser gun laws in major cities leads to less crime. [/B]It makes me wonder if the two criteria are linked at all.
maybe true....however, there is also no evidence to suggest that TIGHTER gun laws in major cities leads to less crime. in fact, there is a decent amount of evidence to the contrary.

still a FACT that VIOLENT GUN CRIME was HIGHER overall during clinton's federal assault weapon ban. all the evidence of increased gun control is available to disaggregate if you wish.

it still points to....increased gun control laws are generally ineffective in reducing gun violence in the United States.

We have to keep taking noobs shooting, with the 22LRs. The public, in general, will
come to the realization that these anti-gunners play with dolls, in their own time.

And the PCs will move on to their latest fad, maybe making new muslim pork-free
menus for MacDonalds, next. We have to stay the course, and do the right things.
