Hello everyone! I am probably going to have to move Illinois relatively soon. I am coming from a very gun friendly state and I need help. My SO may be working in Schaumberg in NW Cook county. We would like to live in a gun friendly county outside of Cook, since I know that local ordinances are in effect in many counties. Because of this Cook county is not an option for us. Can you all kindly give me some information on the more gun friendly counties in the area? Preferably places whee I wouldn't run into trouble for shooting on my own property? Thanks so much!

I live in DeKalb county and as far as 'gun friendly in Illinois' DeKalb County does okay. We are about 45 minutes west of Schaumburg. Schaumburg is a hellish city to live in. You can move close to the Huntly entrance/exit of I-90 and be to Schaumburg under an hour.

I would definitely avoid Cook County and what they call the collar counties which are Kane, DuPage, Lake, Will and McHenry Counties.

Play around with this map. You can see I-90 and I-88 wil get you into Schaumburg.

I’m in Hampshire Illinois on 11 acres and shoot and turkey hunt in my backyard and nobody bothers me. McHenry County Illinois on the outskirts of Huntley around Union and Marengo is very gun friendly.

Cook is the big no no! Higher sales tax and most places will not ship ammo or reloading components to Cook. It should really be named Chicago County.

I think that what you have to look at if you want to shoot on your property is how far from your neighbor will you be shooting. I recall seeing somewere that you have to be 100yds. from a residence. But it all depends on how tolerant your neigbors are. I live on 7 acres in rural unincorporated Will county and gunfire from target practice and hunting is a daily occurance and nobody complains. A *****y neigbor can cause you grief. Find a rural location with some acrage.

Why settle for living in the WORST state of the 50 for gun ownership? Why not go across the line and live in Indiana, or cross the other line and live in Wisconsin, depending on what part of Chicago you are working in? Nice interstates going both ways would make short work of a 20 mile commute. Heck, I commuted 30 miles of BACK roads for almost 20 years here in TN. You get used to it after a few weeks, and I actually looked forward to the quiet time to listen to music, talking books, language tapes, etc.

A 20 to 30 mile commute in TN is not the same as in Northern Illinois. Here we have 2 seasons, snowy slipery winter and construction season, both will effect your travel time big time.

Country living McHenry County Illinois supports President Trump!

Jimski, that was exactly my plan. There were a few homes in Hampshire I was looking at with 3-5 acres in rural locations. It would still only be between 30-40 minutes from Schaumberg.
If you move to Hampshire, let me know. I'm about 8 miles from there. :D

I understand; we lived downstate a bit (Pekin), but was pretty bad there as well. My 30 mile commute here in TN took 50 minutes to an hour every trip.
Made a long day, but the alternative was to live closer to NASHVILLE, and there is NO WAY I would ever do that!

I see it as a decision regarding how you want to spend your life. You can live in a crappy location so that work is convenient, or you can live where you WANT to live, and just make it work for the job.

Well, I live a bit west of Hampshire. I am okay with the gun laws here but they aren't the best, that's for sure. You must get a Firearms Owner's Identification Card (FOID) to own guns in Illinois. Just this year we can test so we can carry concealed. I just haven't pursued it yet. It's a little pricey but I'm going to do it no matter what.

Illinois, in general, is not known for it's 'user friendly' gun laws. I have guns and I do go to a range on occasion. I live in a small farming community and EVERYBODY here has at least a shotgun. The closer you get to Chicago, the less likely anyone is to own guns. If you HAVE to live in Illinois, I guess here is pretty good. But the Southern half if Illinois is better.

Again, the further you get from Chicago, the better it is.

Hi to all -

wanted to share good news recently discovered.

I wrote to an Illinois State Rep (Barbara Wheeler - R) and convinced her to create House Bill 5950. This bill will reduce the time a person must wait before applying to have ones firearm rights restored from 20 to 5 years.

In basic terms this bill 5950 will allow ANYONE convicted of a felony in the state of Illinois to apply for their restoration with the court of the county of which they were convicted in just 5 years instead of the grueling and unjust 20 years.

I have been convicted of felony retail theft back in 2013 at age 19 for theft of $479 worth of merchandise. I am now 24 years old and am hopeful for a lawful way for me to possess and own firearms once again. Short of a pardon, this bill would be the only other hope. Please, let’s all contact our local reps if you are an Illinois resident and let’s get this passed and begin reversing the extremely discriminating FOID card rules that have battered Illinois firearm ownership since the late 1960’s.

I want to express gratitude towards a very caring Barbara Wheeler who has the courage to stand against the notorious anti-gun Illinois atmosphere and is one of the only individuals that is actually attempting to create real change in the state. It is terrible that she is declined to run again as she is very needed in these dire times and having her press the issues that all of us regular citizens experience daily was something that has not been taken for granted by us Illinois residents. Barbara you will be greatly missed.

Everyone has permission if they would like to copy and paste this message anywhere they feel right.

Jacob

Let’s get this passed

Sorry to say but if there is anyway you can stay out of Illinois do it!
I know one of the officers that even if his neighbors see someone come over with a gun case they raise H. This is in the Streamwood area well out side of Chicago proper. But like he said, the liberal do gooders can set outside their home for ours with their yuppies playing violins in to the night and he never complains about them! Not my kind of area I would want to subject myself or my family to. If I had to work in Chicago area and Illinois with no other choice. Wisconsin would be good choice or Indiana. But do not plan on taking any CCW into the area. So you will be unarmed.

Numerous Illinois counties have declared themselves gun owner sanctuaries.

Cook county has pretty much no shooting on your own land (there may be some exclusions). Lake county also has very strict shooting on your own land ordinances. McHenry county just passed a noise ordinance which I see being abused against gun owners.
