Hello the slide is locking open after the 9th round on my 22-a and on my sd40ve at random. Tried different mags did not make a difference as well as different brands of ammo.
I was looking for the words, "My thumb was nowhere near the slide stop lever." If that's not the problem, it may be a weak slide stop spring, causing the slide stop lever to move up on recoil.
Im pretty sure im not bumping the slide lock. I have other semi autos and the premature lock don't happen. I have another sdve too in 9mm and its fine. Could very well be the springs. But i will be double sure im not bumping the lock next shooting session. If it is the springs i hope SW sends me them with out sending the guns in.
I have 3 mags for the 22 and 2 for the 40. Changing them up did not help unfortunately. Sunday it's not supposed to be real cold out im going to shoot them and pay cloose attention to where my hands are.
I had my slide locking back on my Glock 35 on every shot...not intermittently so I talked to my consultant "you tube" and found that my slide release spring was in the wrong position, likely happening during my last cleaning I suppose. I could tell the slide release was not functioning like my Glock 19 so I thought it might be broken, but fortunately, it was just out of alignment....a few minutes and viola it is in good working order again.
I'm saying all of that to say check your slide release mechanism as the spring may be worn, broken or out of position.
Check the contact point where the mag follower hits the slide lock lever. Since it does it with different mags the contact point may be deformed or the slide lock lever itself may have a bit to much side to side play.
Ok checked everything against my new sd9ve. All is a like. Shot it today made sure i was not bumping the lock. It still did it. Then when i got home something dawned on me. I used to tap my mags to seat the bullets. I got out of doing it. So next time im going to see if doing that will help.
I have heard that if the ammo is forward some it can cause premature lock back. Also are the lower frames interchangeable? They look exactly the same. But im not sure if the 9 frame can handle the the 40 recoil.

The slide lock is a simple lever spring arrangement.
Since it locks back with different mags the problem has to be in the slide lock assembly. Though the problem may not be readily visible.
Im sorry i figured everyone knew SW has a life time warranty. I sure will post what they fix on it. I was a good boy and sent in the registration card lol.
Still waiting on the return label. But it was nice today and i took some of my handguns out. Including the 40. I picked up some federal 180 grn ammo, Ran a mag through the 40. No early lock back. Well i loaded again and ended up shooting 1/2 of 200 round range pack and it ran perfect. Still going to send it in. But it was nice to have a good session. Nailed the 12 inch gong too with it at 50 yards.
Not to worry. It's probably partying its grip off with the other pistols.
Seriously Smith will get it right but they are a tad on the slow side at times.
Where I come from, the number of repairs indicate a possible trend.
If it is a busy time for repairs, why? Possible recall coming?
When I buy a car, I look in the service area to see if the same models show up regularly.
At the local Dodge dealer, rarely do I see a Charger, Challenger, or 300. Now the front wheel drive vehicles, all the time. Guess what has been crossed off on purchasing.
I just got off the phone with them. It is fixed. They replaced the slide stop.
