.222 Mauser mag ?

30 years ago, I rebarreled a '93 Mauser chambered for .222. I have shot it a lot, can get smaller than one-inch 5-shot groups at 100 yards, and have killed a lot of groundhogs and a couple of crows with it.

But, I did nothing with the magazine so the rifle is a single-shot. Now I would like to try blocking the back of the original magazine well and adding a .222 sized magazine in the remaining space to see if I can make the gun feed.

So, I thought it would help if somebody would tell me the dimensions of the magazine or magazine box for a Remington 700 or 788 in .222. Maybe another make would give me what I am looking for . Does anybody have one they are willing to measure?

Thanks for looking.

if i'm not mistaken, the 222 Rem. used a short action receiver, and the magazine used a short action one with a spacer in it to make it shorter internally. IIRC, that spacer was at the rear of the magazine box. so externally the box dimensions are the same on the short action Model 700 actions. i don't have one torn down currently, but i do have one Model 700 in 204 Ruger which should be the same as the 222 Rem. Mag. and i know it doesn't have the spacer. best i can figure out is the short action magazine boxes with the spacer were used for the 222 Rem. the 17 Rem. and couple of others.

later on this evening, i'll disassemble mine and get you the external measurements.

Thanks! I found a series of photos of that magazine, with length and height on eBay, so what I need are width at top and bottom, front and back. Also, I can't tell from the photos whether there is any curl or angle to the top of the sides.

Dallas, don't bother to check for me. The fog lifted from my brain and I just bought the one I saw on eBay. I spent decades living on the edge of having enough and my mind is still geared to make anything I can and buy as little as possible, but I don't have to be quite as tight now and am trying to realize that now and then it's better to buy some small thing than spend days making it. Thanks for your willingness to help. I hope you have not already plunged into all the measuring.

well thanks for the heads-up! i just got finished disassembling mine! JK!

but i was incorrect about mine. it is the short action magazine box, and it does have the spacer in the rear of the magazine box. the spacer is just under 1/2" deep. the sides are straight, with no taper or angle where they meet up to the bottom of the receiver.

wished i could take a picture of my magazine box with the spacer in it for you to give you an idea of what it looks like exactly. (my digital camera is fried!)

There are plenty of "junk" Mausers rebarrled to .308 that use a block.
