Hello to all . I am new here so apologize if this scenario has been covered . I just got my pistol permit ( here in NY ) in November . A week later I bought my first pistol with no problem . The same day I put another one on layaway . A month later when I have it payed off and try to pick it up my back ground check comes back with a delay then later a deny. I have run the background check 3 more times all with the same result . Now my money is tied up in a gun I can't get and I have done all the paperwork for the appeal but I'm told the nics system is currently working on appeals from JUNE of last year and today I read in the USA today all nics appeals have been suspended the fbi can't handle the ones they have ! What do I do now?

Go to one of the CSD websites, and download the form. On the back, there is a list of all the offenses they can deny you for. they are the same on every application.

It would take looking up each law, and comparing it ot what is in your record, one at a time, to figure out what the issue is.

On a NY denial, it would be easier for me, as I kept up with Ny laws for close to 25 years, but I am still learning the laws here in PA. Ny, I could likely have quoted the statute, Sub statute, and paragraph. Not the case here yet.
So I’ve called the pa state trooper who handles the permit denials what she told me to do is to call the court house where I applied for the permit and get an appointment on the docket to talk to the judge about the pa certificate of relief. So I did that and was told they have no idea what im talking about and when they asked the judge he said he has never heard of such a thing.

Update…… I have bought 2 guns and no problem about 2 years ago. I tried to get a permit in Mckean county pa but was denied again .
And now today I was denied again for a new pistol. And get this the store I tried to buy it from does things *** backwards in the buying process. First you have to put the gun on your permit ( before you own it ) then you do your background check then you pay for it! Then if you fail as I did you have to go get the gun off your permit. How stupid is that system?

Update I now have a senator , and a congressman involved. I was informed to talk to the county clerks office. I did and left a message and was contacted by the sheriffs department pistol permit officers. I was told the problem is my favorite judge gave me a certificate of release of disability C form . And because of recent federal changes I now need a certificate of release of disability B form . I now have to go back to that court and get a new certificate of release of disability to be able to buy anything. My permit is valid I just can’t buy.

Crazy delays. Deliberately planned by the crafters of this process, I would guess. If only to make the process so onerous that most people would just give up and "go away" (stop trying).

Kudos to you, for your determination to get past their potholes they've placed in the lawful acquisition of arms. Hopefully, since it's to this point now, you'll quickly get it resolved. Good luck.

Zman- you have been plugging away at this for at least 6 years now. If you should ever find yourself in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it would be my honor to buy you a beer and a BBQ.

I am convinced the officials you have been dealing with grew up pulling the wings off of butterflies.
