I recently acquired a Vepr in 7.62x54r, I will get some pictures for you guys when I get home in a couple of days. I was curious about the pros and cons of this gun?

My first thought on it was awesome, shoots cheap ammo and fairly accurate(from what reviews said). The gun I have has just a hair over 20" barrel on it. I have seen nothing but good reviews on them on the web, but wanted a more credible source on thoughts so I thought I would ask you fellas. I know magazines are expensive little buggers for it, and I am familiar with the AK platform.

Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, hopefully this weekend.

Let me know any experiences you guys have with it.

Thanks!!

I know I'm late to this thread, but I'm a big Vepr fan, so...

I've had a 20" barrel Vepr 7.62x54r for about three years now. It's fun, cool, a complete beast, and I love it. Pros: Absolutely reliable with any ammo, surprisingly accurate, extremely well made and solid, super fun at the range. Cons: magazine options aren't great (thanks to csspecs at least there's a good 10 rounder), bolt design is relatively weak and not compatible with standard AKs.

Here are some thoughts based on my experience:

- Definitely buy the csspecs 10 round steel mags. They're fantastic and bring the rifle to life. The "other" plastic 10 round mags are lousy, I have two and regret buying them.

- I bought a quick release scope mount and really like it, works great, and it's fun to shoot with both a scope and irons. I actually prefer shooting with the stock irons, they're good.

- Try to find a complete bolt online if you can. The bolt is a weaker design relative to other AK types, and they do occasionally fail. None of the bolt parts are compatible with a standard AK bolt, so if anything breaks you're dead in the water. I paid a fair bit for a complete spare bolt and I'm glad I have it.

- I changed the recoil spring to a standard AK heavier spring, and I much prefer it. It gives a more solid, controlled feel to the recoil, and seems to slightly reduce felt recoil.

- I added a PWS muzzle device and it's fantastic, a must have upgrade. It settles everything down and makes for very little recoil and more accurate, more comfortable shooting.

- Did I say I love it? :D

Have fun with it!

I'd worry more about the shoulder stock LOP. WHY, oh, WHY do they put a 10"
length of pull on a rifle they are exporting to where non-midgets live? I don't want to hear that "thick soviet coats" crap. They ship the rifles here, not to Thick Soviet Coatsville.

Pros:
-7.62 X54R caliber-think full-size, powerful ammo-30.06 type penetration
-Box mags- pricey, but box.
-cycles well, dependable
-middling accurate, once you adjust the balky sights
-It's a manly gun,be expecting to chew up some downrange, and feel some recoil
-shoots cheap military ammo(see below)

Cons:
-No bolt-hold-open on last round
-sights take some effort to adjust
-crappy LOP on standard stock
-It's a manly gun, be expecting to chew up some downrange, and feel some recoil
-Ejector chews the crap out of expensive brass, so forget about reloading for this rifle.
-Owner's manual is a poorly translated small pamphlet from the Russian Molot
factory

Once you get it rockin', it rules the plain, but you'll probably be doing some tweaking to get it there.
