Just got a Type I rifle. Its a Carcano built to Type 38 specs. From what Ive read these were made for the Japanese Navy by the Italians. I guess the Japanese didnt care for them much and most were put into storage.

The one I just got has a perfect bore and crown, and doesnt look to be shot very much. It looks just like a Type 38 except for the Carcano bolt and action. It uses the same standard clips and bayonet as the Type 38 as well.

I have a few loaded 6.5 Jap rounds so hopefully I can go shoot it today! :D

Some pics next to a standard Type 38. Type I top, Type 38 bottom.

You can see the differences in the bolt, The Type I having a Carcano action. The Type I has no dust cover provisions, a larger triggerguard, and a slightly different buttplate.

Also, there's no "Mum" like the Arisakas had.

Nice find trez. You're right, it does look a lot like a type 38.
