So, I just got my AR-15 back from my parents and there is some surface rust on the barrel.

Is there anything special I have to do to treat it or will some CLP on a cloth take care of it?

CLP, Kroil, or any light oil on burplap or other clean cloth. Wet cloth good, rub, changing to clean spot on cloth as needed. Repeat until arm falls off, then change hands. Slow, but works MUCH better than you might think.

For light rust with no pitting, I use 0000 steel wool (brass woll if you can find it). Soak the wool in solvent or very light oil and rub gently. It will erase the rust. The liquid is to keep the rust flushed away. The rust you are removing is more abrasive thant he wool so getting it flushed away keeps you from damaging the surface.

In the future, you should remember that the phosphate finish (or bluing for that matter) does not prevent rust. It etches the surface allowing oil to adhere. The oil prevents the rust.

BTW, for those looking for the COPPER kitchen scrub pads (Chore Boy) you can ASK for hem at your local Stop-N-Rob Convenience Store & Head Shoppe. They keep them under the counter due to theft. Be sure it is copper, not copper plated steel.

So........ why do they carry them? Huge demand for clean pots? For those of you that have led sheltered lives-

Well, see those little glass tubes with the fake roses? Remove cardboard and rose, toss. Stuff a bit of the COPPER mesh in the glass tube.

Voilà! Instant crack pipe. And the merchant has not violated the "drug paraphernalia" laws. Steel mesh will burn, copper does not.

Now, didn't that just make yer day? :(

C3, you can tell you are in a classy stop-n-rob when the chore boy's are available singly or even more classy is when they offer a "kit", a 1/4 chore boy & large lighter & flowered tube. I saw a lot of those sold at the curb store on Cleveland in Memphis. Grodyness.
