Peekskill, a town in New York, has created a program that allows people to make money by snitching on their neighbors.

Peekskill is installing an anonymous tip line that will allow callers to alert authorities about suspected illegal guns. If the information provided to the police results in confiscating an “illegal firearm,” the caller makes 500 bucks. Just like that.

The program is called “Operation Safe Streets.”

It's kind of like Germany during WWII, they had neighbors selling out neighbors there back then also!

From the picture, it doesn't look like a ghetto or an Aryan Nation stronghold. It just might be a case of political grandstanding, with zero outcome. Would be interesting to know how many illegal guns this town will end up collecting.

How do you collect a reward if you provide an anonymous tip?

Has anyone called the number to see if such a reward is legit?

Good point. I wonder if the Author should have used the phrase "Confidential" and not anonymous?

I think you remain anonymous as a tipper. If a confiscation results, you graduate to "confidential".

Probably somebody gets the "reward" money, but it won't be the caller.
But this is, as somebody posted, like 1930's Germany. Only instead of reporting people suspected of being Jews, they will be reporting people suspected of exercising their Constitutional rights.
The late, great "Land of the Free" is going down the tubes.
Instead of worrying about states seceding from the Union, we should be evicting states like New York, Massachusetts, and Kalifornicateya.

Snitches get Stitches... On this topic they should get much worse...

Retaliation is a very REAL threat to the pond scum who would seek to prosper from a program like this... and I suspect there are enough honorable LEO's left to ensure that arrested gun owners learn the identity of their informers.

Liberals are creating a very dangerous situation with this... and it will lead to deaths.

Government budgets are free to examine, anyone who receives money will not be anonymous.

thats not true. Records can be sealed by a court order.

That said, you do risk a possible leak. If I were reporting an armed gangbanger, I wouldn't bother with the dowry. (Pay attention: a thug, not a fellow armed citizen.)

We have a program here called TIP, Turn in Poachers. The caller can receive up to $1000 and their Identity is Confidential. How far one could actually dig to reveal the callers Identity, I do not know, but I do know it is not as simple as asking for budget information.

LE use payed "Confidential" informants all the time, there identities are rarely revealed.

A program like this will provide an opportunity for anybody who is P. O.'d at a neighbor to call them in as a suspect. Then, true to form, the corrupt cops who are willing to go along with the program will bring a "throw-down" gun with them so they can "find" it when they do their raid.

I think they should flood the system. Make hundreds if not thousands of calls a day, using the names and addresses of City Council members and other known Socialist that support this. With a thousand calls a day, see how long they can handle the load.

This is in upstate NY in the Hudson Valley (I used to live around the corner from Peekskill). There are lots of farmers, hunters and outdoorsmen in this area and it is also a heavily Convervative population thers so I don't see this going to far. Maybe some of the lowlife gangbangers in the area might use it to get some other punks they don'y like, but other than that I don't see much of a future for this.

This is going to be a big can of worms. Dont like your neighbor? Rat him out even if he does not have a gun. Watch the Gestapo kick in his door in the middle of the night. Call in the names of anti's and news hacks. See the law suits as people set themselves up to sue the city. Every shyster in the city will be beating a path to the courtroom with dollar signs in their eyes.
You have to look at the bright side. Inundate the system and turn it into a hell for the NAZI perpertrators. :D

I know in drug cases a good lawyer can find out who snitched. How would this program be any different?
