I have the center point 4-16x40 as well. Good and clear but doesn't gather light well. The Bushnell banner 4-12x40 is another good choice. Any 3-9x40 will be fine, but more magnification is better...

I would go with a .223 bolt action rifle. This will be a pleasure to shoot at the range all day and reach out several hundred yards. Ammo is cheap too. Take a look at the Marlin X7 line.

What I don't like about the 22-250 is the cost of ammo. For a "critter-gitter" I prefer the 223. Ammo is very affordable and quite capable of 300+ yard shots.
