I am not a 308 fan, nor a big fan or Remington. I would go with a savagefp in 30.06 if I wanted a bolt gun. But since you already have an ar lower, look into a 6.5 Grendal upper.

If the bow hunter truly made a kill shot let him have it. Same if a gun hunter had put a killing shot in it first and was trailing the deer. On the other hand if they have quit trailing it, keep it.
