Hello "hendoproof", one factor you may want to consider is the fact that if you do pay for a nice S&W or a Ruger SP-101 you have made an investment in something you will be able to get you money back...

Pre-Model-18, everything perfect except: The barrel has a bulge in it (Not sure where, haven't seen it yet). Only fix is to replace the barrel or cut it behind the bulge and reattach the front...
