I dont know where you live, but around here there are 6-8 match's per weekend. And like others said you are really just competing against yourself. The more match's you shoot the better you will get....

I know it is way out of your budget right now, but if you like 1911's and you get serious about competition shooting, you can get a 2011 STI. They are double stack 1911's and are very good guns....
