I think I'd go with the gift card. There is a lot of different kinds of ammo and he may have his personal preferences. Put a note in with it telling him it is for ammo.

My 10/22 has given me over 45 years of service now and is VERY accurate (100% stock) I might clean it every 4-5 years to make sure it doesn't malfunction (hasn't yet except for ammo it doesn't like).

Never did a MKIII but with my MKII's and MKI, it is absolutely essential to stick your left little finger in your right ear as you smack it wit a plastic hammer or it won't go back together.
