Were you shooting skeet or trap? With skeet you need to lead the clay but with trap and a field gun such as yours I shoot right at the clay. For me skeet was harder than trap.

In trap I don't think you can get much better than a Browning BT-99. Not high end but they work very well in trap. I also have a Ruger Red Label OU again not high end but works very good for doubles....

My son bought an 870 and shot at least 100 clays a week with it for about 6 months and never had an issue. I have heard others with the same problem as the op. Looks to be the luck of the draw.

At my club they don't care what you use. The only thing they do care about is if you are safe. I would guess you could use op's gun for sporting clays or skeet. I know it won't work well for trap.

My son and I shoot trap every weekend. Lot's of fun. 51 1st time out isnt that bad. Remember with a field gun aim right at the clay. Trap guns are made to shoot high field guns shoot right on.
