nice .357 single action

Colt (see website) makes their classic gun in .357 -- probably hard to get -- they always seem to be back-ordered. Uberti in Italy makes quality Colt replicas with the Colt-like "4-click" hammer--...

rifle in 270

You also mention range shooting -- do compare the cost of 308 vs 270 ammo -- you can put a lot more 308 down range for the same cost. And quality ammo in either caliber will handle the kind of...

lots of used guns around if someone will help you screen for quality -- pumps and over/unders especially since less likely to be worn out then a semi-auto. O/U guns also don't throw the shells for...

Colt Single Action Army (Ruger, Uberti, USFA replicas if not original) - 45 LC
Browning High Power - 9mm
Sig 226 - 40mm (or if you must, a Glock)
Colt 1911 (Springfield, Ruger - many other...

HK 9mm USP Compact

I've tried lots of guns and lots of calibers -- at my age, disposition and skill level, the 9mm HK USPc keeps hanging in there as my go-to gun in any kind of SD situation I can imagine being in (as a...

skeet/trap

I'd be inclined to stick with 12g -- even 7/8oz loads will work for skeet and 16yard trap -- almost recoil free.

I'd say you can be happy with any of these fine o/u guns in the $2-3k price range-...

Old Eyes - one more time...

Now that I'm over 39 (well, a lot over), I now need correction for both reading and distance. I'm having some success with this arrangement (not a new idea but seems to work for me):

1. Go to...

1st Handgun

It sounds like you are interested in something more than the always versatile .22LR...

1. Think about costs -- 9mm for semi-autos and 38Spec are a lot cheaper than most other rounds. (Note...

ammo cost

If you're going to target shoot and thus use lots of ammo, 223rem, around $.40 each, and 308rem, around $.60, are cheaper than most other center-fire cartridges (.243, .270, .30-06), around $.90...

Also think about double action vs. single action...

Also think about double action vs. single action automatics. Some people can't get comfortable with cocked-and-locked status on 1911s. Compare it to a DA/SA like the HK USP or USP-Compact. These...

hk vs sw

Compare the controls -- I particularly like the decock/safety level on the HK. Also, as a pure psych matter, I associate HK historically with automatic innovation and Smith with revolver innovation...

small auto

You should include the Kahr P380 in your search -- there have been some very positive reviews of this gun including a statement about its low recoil. Kahrs are on the high-quality/high-price side of...

HK 9mm vs 45acp

This is a very personal decision. Statistically in the USA, it's about a 50-50 split (much more toward 9mm in Europe). If you can try both pistols, I would take the one that you shoot better under...

clays guns

You can go crazy optimizing guns so I would sure start out with what you've got already. The skeet field is a pretty good place to start, then move on to trap, then to sporting clays (which...

28g

Probably wouldn't be around except for Skeet -- one of the 4 gauges used in competition. People like the 3/4oz@1200fps load characteristics -- and of course the mild recoil for even a lightweight...

Really?

I'm surprised at the dislike of lasers given the rate at which they are being sold. Many people must value having at least the option of activating a laser when either their uncorrected vision or...

O/U vs SxS

This topic is up there with 357 vs 45 as a no-right-answer topic...

SW M&P 9mm

I would at least pick up a Smith & Wesson M&P in 9mm to compare it to Glock -- they seem to have some sales momentum for this American made product. there is a full-size and a compact available.

thoughts on first owned rifle

Do give some thought to ammo costs -- .22LR is about $.05 per shot while .223 is maybe $.30 -- so you get 6X as much shooting with a .22LR -- if you are thinking about high volume range shooting with...
