I owned a Lyman deerstalker carbine at one time myself and as I recall, it was not only accurate with round balls, but several conicals and some sabots. It has to be a BEST BUT in the mktplace. Dan

For my money, it is one more thing to go wrong. I believe, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I like the 209 primers, they go bang every time. Dan

Since this is I THINK? a blackpowder forum section, if you are talking about blackpowder and substitutes, I have used most of them from GOEX blackpowder (hard to get in my area now) to Clear Shot,...

IF your main reason for buying the rifle is to hunt whitetails, the .270 WSM is a superb long range whitetail rig. For that matter, so is the .270 Winchester as made famous by Jack O'Conner years...

.308 range?

I have a Savage Weather Warrior series in .308 Win. In general terms, if you sight in w/say a 150 grain bullet such as a Winchester PP, and put your shots about 2 inches high at 100 yards, you should...

7MM mag

I agree with other posts. It is a great caliber, that shoots slightly flatter than the 30-06 and hits a little harder (160 grain 7MM (vs.) 165 grain 30-06). Recoil is similar. The 30-06 surpasses it...

.270 scope

For the money, the Bushnell 3X9X40 Elite 3200 with rainguard is a great buy. It is NOT fully multi-coated like its big brother the 4200, but can be had for under $200 in several outlets. Right now...

First Gun

At about age 7 as I recall, I got a Mossberg, bolt action clip fed .22 and I think it was a 340K Rock Chucker or something similar to that. Killed a few woodchucks, crows etc. as a kid with it. Back...

.338 Federal

Left a NEW post yesterday concerning the .338 Federal but can't find it anywhere on forum- perhaps I just didn't release it or something??

In any event, I was wondering how many of you out there...

optics?

Not enough information to answer the question accurately?

There is not much real world difference between the .308 and the 30-06 - except the ought six shoots heavier loads better than the .308....

30:06 bg enough?

The ought six has taken probably every game animal on the planet including plenty of BIG bears, etc. It is not ideal for woodchucks and it is NOT ideal for taking a brown bear, but it will take...

Largest cal rifle

On a lighter NOTE, I recently purchased a new in the box Ruger mdl 77 in .350 Rem mag. The rifle has great ergonomics, easy to carry and packs a real punch for any North American Game and is adequate...

favorite rifle

Pray I never have to limit myself to just one. I love them all, but I normally reach for the Savage weather warrior in .308, although it is not exactly a vintage rifle, or a collector type gun. Dan

.338 Federal

What do you all think about the recently introduced .338 Federal cartridge now that it has been around for a year or so? I bought one in Ruger mdl 77 Hawkeye and put a Bushnell 3X9X40 Elite 3200 on...

Buffalo Hunt

NICE trophy buffalo. No advice needed at this point I guess, however if I were going tommorrow, I would take my 45-70 loaded with some Garret Hammerheads or Buffalo Bore 405 grain heavy loads. Short...

Mostly whitetail deer and mostly in shotgun/ML territory, occasionally bear over bait, and would like to go:

Alaskan coastal bear hunt, boar hunting with a 45-70, moose hunting again and maybe elk...

Best deer gun

My number one choice would be .308 Win using 150 grain Win PP. My Savage weather warrior is a tack driver with that load, easy to carry, quick to point, hits hard.

Other good choices would be...

Used to own a Ruger mdl 77 .300 Win Mag with a muzzle brake. Shot real nice, however I eventually let it go as it was simply too noisy. Thought if I ever got the urge for a long range .30 cal again,...
