Will PBS 'Frontline' Series on Sandy Hook Hit Hard on Gun Issues?

Stay tuned for Tuesday's Frontline two-part series. Will be interesting to see what direction they take it. Two preview videos at the end of the article. Have to check the Courant this Sunday as well.

Frontline has now posted a preview and video trailer and two-minute interview excerpt (see below) for its two-part series starting next Tuesday on Sandy Hook mass killer Adam Lanza, how he was raised by his mother, and how the tragedy sparked a very polarized gun debate in that town and across the country.

The Hartford Courant has joined in the probe, and its first major story based on this research wlll be published this Sunday. And PBS promises many other programs on gun violence via its various other units, such as its public affairs and science divisions.

But how tough an approach will they take? Will it be overly “even-handed” or really break new ground and shift the debate at least a little?

One issue that I’ve long lamented as being underplayed by the media is the role of Nancy Lanza, the mother. She is often painted in sympathetic colors, as single mom who faced very tough issues in raising a troubled son. Fair enough… to a point. But she was also the one who bought an arsenal of guns, taught Adam to shoot and left them close at hand for his fateful, fatal, use. She was also something of a “survivalist,” apparently.

Yet PBS, in one of its previews, portrays her in the main headline as “the 27th victim.” Really? I would say “enabler” or even, if you will, “accomplice.” She is such a key figure because her case reveals so much at the heart of the current debate, with millions owning assault-style weapons (and other deadly guns), and keeping them within reach of young or sick family members.

Or perhaps I will change my mind after the viewing the series, which does look at the gun debate set off by the tragedy.

“After the horrible events in Newtown, we asked ourselves what we could do, as public service media, to add context and analysis to the news coverage,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS chief programming executive and general manager, General Audience Programming, in a statement. “We believe our public affairs and science shows will bring additional perspective and continue the national conversation about this specific tragedy and open a wider lens on how mass shootings affect us all.”

Here’s a full press release on the series. Below: trailer and excerpt.

If it's PBS, it's guaranteed to be a heavily left/liberal viewpoint. It will also be ponderously self righteous and morally indignant.

Pbs is pretty much in the same vein as joseph goebbels. Its the propoganda arm of the national socialists here in america.

Its blocked channel on my tv

It's the Politburo for the Socialist in Chief.

PBS Denver aired a 9/11 special from a truther group. Played it several times, and I think you can still download it from their site. They played it for a donation drive.

That effort impressed me that some truth squeaks past PBS.

This is the 9/11 broadcast that aired in august 2012

If they will show this, I think we can cut them some slack for showing many views to a subject.

They typically will fairly present many views of a subject, but will conclude with or favor a left leaning viewpoint.

PBS and NPR are the "Al Jezeera" of American broadcasting.

My feelings exactly. I have a real problem when I see her face posted with the other (truly) innocent victims who's lives were cut short by this deranged person.... As a parent myself of a wonderful 11 year old, I can say this.. should there come a day (God forbid) when he or anyone else in my household start to struggle with addiction, a grip on reality, depression or all of the above... then the locked rifle and pistol cabinets and ammo cans will quickly become a fireproof combination safe with my wife and I privy to the combination only.

As I have argued with many an individual since this incident, I wept over this event also... and I am sure anyone here on this forum given the chance would have done ANYTHING to stop this person from doing this... but the focus should be on mental cases like Lanza and the fact that this happened in a GUN FREE zone... which gave NO opportunity for defense by the victims... NOT THE GUN !!!

What I wouldn't give for a time machine.....

Most people on both sides of the fence are tired of hearing about Sandy Hook. Even far left liberals are joking about Obama's fourth grade cabinet. They jokingly say he should turn the fourth graders loose on congress. Once the kids go to sleep no one watches PBS anyway.
